BlackBerrySpeak.com Magazine - Your First and Best Stop For Quick Local & National News and Information About and For Black America
It's "Our world - Unwrapped - Encapsulated"
Issue 41 - February 16 - 29, 2004
New York, NY - Taking advantage of the burgeoning digital connection in African-American homes, a splashy, new magazine is making waves in the urban community. Drawing from more than 500 sources, blackberrySPEAK.com Magazine highlights the most newsworthy and relevant stories, features, columns, and interviews while connecting its readers to the full story with Internet links.
At blackberrySPEAK.com readers will find news, information, and commentary on topics as diverse as the community, politics, education, business, lifestyle, hip hop culture and music, arts and entertainment, sports, empowerment, spirituality, health, and sex. Entries that change daily include a sports ticker, horoscope, and 'loose thunks' those comments overheard at the water cooler. A reader favorite is "idaberry", a satirical commentary on issues ranging from "family craziness" to "Queer Eye for the Straight Gal" to the posit of - "Why do only black people have Leaders?"
Different from any other urban magazine in the market today, blackberrySPEAK.com combines the best of urban publications and mainstream media, into one, clear, concise, efficient, time saving source. Think TIME or NEWSWEEK...but with 'flava' and spark. And it differs from most urban internet sites because we're not a dating service or job-hunting central. We're a magazine and a news source. "What they do in speck, we do in depth," says Attorney A. Renee' West, the magazine's publisher and creator.
So just who reads blackberrySPEAK.com Magazine? Ms. West concludes that the strength of the site is the diversity of its readership - economically, ethnically, educationally and geographically. "Our African-American readers range in age from twenty year old college students to a seventy-nine year old retired teacher. We also have a Japanese mom in Hawaii, a Jewish attorney from New York, and a conservative Republican from Atlanta, Georgia. Their similarity - "they know that information and education 'levels' the uneven playing field that many of us encounter. Knowledge is a key to achieving one's dreams and controlling one's own destiny, and forging a bond among geographically and ethnically diverse communities is essential," Ms. West explains. "How to interpret and apply that information and knowledge, they probably disagree," she continues. "It's what makes the blackberrySPEAK.com Magazine unique. The presentation of the grey."
The magazine, which started as a newsletter and commentary to Ms. West's friends and professional associates, launched as a full-fledge magazine with promotion, February 1, 2004. Presently it issues biweekly on Mondays on the Internet. Single copy sales will launch in January 2005. Weekly distribution, both on the internet and in single copy will occur by Spring 2005.
