1. Email works but ideally I'd suggest talking to them in person. If you see someone wearing letters who isn't busy, just walk up and introduce yourself. Strike up a conversation, see what the organization is about and if its something you could see yourself a part of. If the conversation goes well he might introduce you to other brothers, giving you a better taste of what his organization is like.
2. I went to events from two groups, I don't know how typical this is. I'd say get to know all of the organizations on campus (I know here they all had tables on the main drag of campus where you could stop by and chat with them) and narrow it down to 1-3 you could really see yourself a part of. It should work out that you can make events for more than one group and I don't see any harm in doing so.
3. It really all depends on what the group is looking for. Being yourself is honestly the best thing you can do. However, I will say that when you rush, you should try and get to know everyone at least somewhat-well, without making it look like you're trying too hard. When they go to vote you're more likely to get a favorable outcome if everyone knows you and sees that you're genuine and laid-back about the whole experience.
ETA Disclaimer: I'm not Greek myself (though I have gone through one rush) so my word perhaps shouldn't be taken as law. Just some friendly advice based on what I've seen work.

Don't accept a bid and then turn it down when you get another one - that's rude and tacky.
Tell the group that you already got a bid from that you're very interested, but you want to go through rush before you commit to an organization. Go to rush events for both fraternities and then make a decision based on your rush experience.
Also, I had a lot of people tell me they could see me in XYZ because I dressed like them (really people?). I would never fit in with that fraternity, so make a decision for yourself and don't listen to what other people say.

I just thought of something else. Am I correct in assuming that rush isn't until next semester? If the chapter pressures you into accepting your bid right away I would consider that a warning sign, it should really be more of an impetus for them to make sure they recruit you by the time rush begins.

I am a student at a state university and I am in the same boat as far as doing "informal" rushing goes. So far I like this one fraternity house. I am planning on rushing about 2 more to keep my mind open and make the best decision I have some questions:
- Is it more of a matter of getting along with the members, feeling comfortable and fitting in while being yourself that matters?
- What kind of people would turn these members off?

I am curious. As a general rule, what are things that I should not say and do besides talk about anything controversial and being fake?

Should I alter other people's posts when I quote them?

First is pretty obvious, don't try to hook up with an active's gf or f*$k buddy. It will probably get kicked out of any more rush events. If you're at a rush party or a late nite don't get way to drunk where they have to take care of you because it only makes you look worse. If you can walk home after the night is over do it, they may tell you that its cool to crash at the house, but that really may not be the case.

1. He asked the question in the fall.
2. That's great that you love your organization, but this is the second thread where you've said that people should just join DTD. I hope that's not how you truly feel. I wouldn't want just anyone joining AST. Especially because reading one post on a message board is a pretty difficult way to learn enough about someone to think, "I hope they join my organization!"
3. Laugh at LookAtMeImADelt... AND at brother's jokes... if they're actually funny.
