GLO's in books

Has anyone read the books Eating the Cheshire Cat (Tri Delt) or Gloria (Delta Lambda..not sure if this is real)? I have both and I love them but I was wondering how true to life each is concerning the sororities in them. Both of them detail the rush and initiation process. I think I could survive Gloria's experience but in Cheshire Cat they do something kinda icky for initiation. And what got me was Tri Delt is real and nationally recognized, and they even said University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa, so how on earth did the author get permission to write that?
