How bad does one W look?

Hi, I was wondering how bad one withdrawal would look on a college transcript to a sorority? I am taking college algebra this Spring semester, and if possible may try to clep out and lighten the load (I am taking 15 hours, and I will be working and volunteering this semester a lot). I would like to rush this Fall. Even though I still would receive the credit for the class, I was wondering if sororities look down on that?

Jeez...just worry about your education and not about how sororities will look at your transcript! My advice. If you can clep out of an algebra class, you can make an "A" in an algebra class. Your GPA, as you previously told us, could use a few "A"s. Get through this semester, THEN focus on recruitment. You'll be a lot more likely to be successful.

What the heck does "clep out" mean?

If it's a required class - try getting it over with now instead of later when (hopefully) you're in a sorority and busy. Or are you talking about taking it credit/no record? How could you get credit for it if you withdraw? I'm so confused.

I thought maybe it was in reference to "the clap." Like, if you have it, they don't want you in their algebra class.

"Clep" is the past tense of "clap" if you're referring to "social diseases."

Good grades are important to getting into a sorority. If you receive a bid, you need to maintain a good GPA or you could be put on a type of academic probation. If you are unable to maintain your grades while you are not in a sorority, you need to consider if you will be able to maintain them if you were to be extended an invitation to join.

Really, you need to focus on your coursework before volunteering or worrying about a sorority. If you can't balance your life without the extra stuff, you will never be able to balance it WITH them.

No, I had never heard of such a thing before. Like agzg, I thought it sounded like some sort of nasty sexual disease from Victorian times. I know people who've tested out of classes but I didn't know there was a program on a national level.

In that case, um, duh, that seems kind of like a no brainer. If I could take a test and get out of a semester of algebra I wouldn't be worrying for a second what a sorority would think of it.

I just think clep instead of CLEP sounds like a venerial disease. Capitalization is important.

Not all colleges accept CLEP scores as credits so please make sure that your college will recognize them.

Good point. I'm not a big advocate of all of those tests anyway. I CLEPed out of several hours of math and English and was so proud of myself at the time. Later, I realized how little it actually did for me. Yeah, it got rid of a requirement, but three credit hours of "A" would have done more. As one of my mentors likes to say, "There's no free lunch."

If you "CLEP" out of a class, you don't get the credits, correct? You are just waiving the prerequisite to take it. For example, my test scores allowed me to skip a few 100-level courses, but I had to fill in those credits with other courses (I was an English major and just took additional English or writing courses).

Or am I wrong about the credits?

No, you get 3 credit hours for the course.

So you're not dropping a couple of classes down to 12 credits? Because you have a low GPA at a community college?

You're asking if a "W" on your transcript is a big deal, yet you're saying how it's nothing to drop a few courses in your other thread.

You've got a lot of questions on this forum about your GPA and classes. MAAAAAAYYYYYYYBE you should focus on your classes, or otherwords, why you're in school in the first place. Then you can worry about your social life.

I'm not sure how it is at all universities, but I'll go out on a limb and say that the school receives your transcripts that show everything when you transfer in. The greek life office will verify you are a student, your GPA, and credit hours. I would find it strange (and upsetting for privacy issues) for every sorority chapter to have a hold of an official transcript. Thus, sororities arent going to see or know that you have a W on your transcript unless YOU tell them during recruitment.

But in having stated the above, if you are worried about your grades or dropping classes you need to focus on your classes and your GPA. Getting an education is why you go to college, not to join a sorority. Sorority membership is a means to enhance the college experience.
