English girl in sororities ?

Hey all! I was just wondering do sororities take people who arn't American or would they decline me because I'm English? Lol sorry this sounds a bit stupid

Sorry - that is a silly question. Nationality doesn't matter. My home chapter has had English, Turkish and, I believe, German members.

Nationality CAN be an issue depending on the region.

As long as you are a full time student (and not an exchange student), there shouldn't be problems...

Depending on the University, you'll still need recommendations, etc. which could be hard to get in England...but not impossible - I am in England and am more than happy to meet with PNMs for Delta Gamma to provide recs.

Nope it shouldn't matter. The chapter I help advise has a sister from Sweden. She even served on the chapter's exec

I think I've become overly suspicious of everyone because of all the Greek fanfic going on here recently, but don't people from England generally refer to themselves as British, rather than English?

^ Not necessarily, it depends on the person/region/country and so forth. As another example, I have a number of friends who would never say they're British, opting rather for "I'm Northern Irish", or "I'm Welsh", or "I'm Scottish". So it's just as likely that someone from England would say "I'm English" instead of "I'm British".

When I was an active, about 25 years ago, a girl who was from an Arab country (don't remember which one) went through. She was a HOT property, probably because she was just so different and interesting.

Of course things change, but from reading what's going on here, in many parts of the country interesting and different is GOOD. The only problem I see is on the campuses where recs are absolutely required you might run into problems unless you have lots of American contacts. Worry about that part, not your nationality.

My chapter has three women who lived in England and one of them lived in Guam too! We also have 3 women from Alaska and a few from the mid-west. I know the last one's are in the states but they always said that it helped during recruitment because people were so interested in learning about their background and it really helped the actives remember who they were, often the actives would know who they were when they returned to the houses the next day even though they hadn't met them. I'd say it'll help you way more then hurt you in the recruitment process!

I think that all else constant, being English would give you an edge because you'd be memorable and you'd bring cultural diversity to the table.

Nationality really isn't an issue.
I have a good friend who was unsure about going through with NPC recruitment because she was worried they wouldn't accept her because of her religion. I told her that wouldn't affect it and if she ended up not like NPC, she could always join a MC. While you're probably not interested in MGC (unless I'm stupidly assuming you're English and wanting a NPC recruitment-which is always possible), there's a moral to the story.

No sorority would reject you because of nationality; that's completely despicable.

More imporantly- any sorority that would cut you based on nationality is NOT a sorority you want to be a part of. That's not sisterhood; it's discrimination.
