gaggle of questions

I just ha a couple questions. I am the president of the sigma omega chapter and I am trying to help out our rush chair and philanthropy chair. I keep telling them to post the question here, but I don't think they have done it.

1. During orientations we have tables set up for each fraternity and I was wondering if you guys handed out packages or anything to guys you speak to. We typically hand out a little paper with our website address on it and that is about it. Right now I am in the process of putting together a package that has our website address on it, FAQ's about TKE and greek life on campus and a list of things that TKE will be doing this year on campus such as RLC, Mixers, Conclave, Parties, Formals, Homecoming, etc. If you hand anything like this out what do you put in these handouts. I want these guys to leave our table after talking with us and taking "tke" home with them. I am trying to get stickers or koozies made too. Any suggestions would be great.

2. We need help coming up with a rush shirt. I am wondering what everyone else has done or if anyone has a favorite rush shirt they could tell me about. I wanted to get down to the rush camp in the spring down in Georgia, but could not. What good shirts did you see down there.

3. We are doing our first TKE week shirt this year. Usually we just do a shirt for our Swamp Party, but we are changing it up this year a little. Like the rush shirt, I need some ideas. Have any of you seen any good shirts for TKE Week.

4. A lot of our brothers are complaining about being out of shape so this fall I am making a new chair. We are calling it the wellness chair. They will be responsible for holding an hour to an hour and a half of cardio training two to three days a week. We require all brothers to play a sport and some guys don't like sports so taking part in this will take the spot of the sport. Along with running we will also have medicine balls. Any of you guys run with your brothers or have running workouts?

Feel free to email me at utctke_224@yahoo.com

assuming there will be parents at these summer orientation sessions, try to steer clear from Koozies and too much mention of parties. that's what the impressionable 17 year olds want to hear, but will turn the parents off before you even get a chance to rush their son. and as we all know, selling TKE to the parents is often times more important that rushing the kid.

i was IFC VP of Recruitment 2 years ago and I set up the whole orientation thing at NC State. we encouraged chapters to bring out composites, pens, scrapbooks, pictures, trophies, past T-shirts, grade reports (if you're proud of your chapter's GPA)....hell, we brought our Sweetheart out to some of the sessions. Always a plus for the mothers to see a nice young lady.

the chapters who failed miserably just stood behind their tables talking to each other or on the phone. they made no effort to meet new people and certainly didn't make their table inviting to potential new members.

the chapters who succeeded (and ended up having good pledge classes as a result) were rarely, if ever, behind their chapter's table. they were out in the lanes talking to everybody who walked by. talking to parents, answering questions, being polite....

the biggest thing I recommended to my guys was to GET THEIR INFORMATION. giving them hand-outs and stuff simply plants the seed and is a good start. if you really want the guy, get his NAME/CELL PHONE NUMBER/HIGH SCHOOL/HOMETOWN. that's really all you need. you can look up his campus number and address when he gets to UT-C in the Fall.

these kids will rarely call you. they don't know any better. you MUST reach out to them and don't take "no" for an answer. don't leave it up to them.

....and lastly, take a road trip to visit Beta-Beta. 'Nooga isn't all that far away from Raleigh (6-7 hours)

Our Chapter is always looking for a new place to go. I was looking at going to Auburn the day after our new guys accept bids in the fall, but a little trip to NC sounds like fun too. You have any suggestions for who I should contact?
