UTC Fraternity Residents vs. Fortwood Neighborhood Residents

http://www.chattanoogan.com/articles/article_158076.asp

Note: Fortwood is a community that is right next to UTC and there are only 2 fraternities left in that neighborhood.

Sigma Chi and Phi Delta Theta have houses but not in the Fortwood neighborhood.

I loved the last statement from Paul Burke, where he brought up the fact that the son of one of the neighborhood complainers had a party of his own while mommy and daddy were out of town:

"The bottom-line issue is the alcohol," she told Mr. Burke. "That's what's causing the noise. That's what's causing the traffic problems."

Mr. Burke took a deep breath.

"I swore I wouldn't bring this up tonight, but last June you and your husband went away for a weekend," he told Mrs. Heath. "And while you were gone your son had a party where there was alcohol consumed . . . We didn't call the police, we didn't complain. But this problem happens everywhere, not just in frat houses."

Which came first? The fraternity house or the neighbor? If they bought a house next door to a fraternity house, what did they expect?

I'm sure they were patting themselves on the back for the good price they got on the house - wonder why.

I'm sorry, but if you buy a house on a freeway, you don't complain to the city to slow the traffic down.

Caveat emptor - Let the buyer beware

But, yeah - haha, "your kid had a party when you weren't home and alcohol was served" Uhh, what do you say to that???

There are 2 primary streets that run through Fortwood: Oak Street and Vine Street. I can safely say that Lambda Chi Alpha has had a house on Oak Street for over 50+ years. I don't know how long the Kappa Sigma house has been in it's current location on Vine Street but it is at least 20+ years. Even after KS had a fire there in the late 80s-early 90s, they re-built on the same location.

Sigma Chi used to have a house on Oak Street but it also burnt down in the 90s. They rebuilt away from Fortwood; I think somehow the Fortwood Association somehow prevented them from rebuilding in the same location but don't remember all of the details surrounding that.

Pi Kappa Alpha had a house across from Sigma Chi but after the chapter folded, Phi Delt bought it. After Phi Delt folded, a non-Greek bought it.

Phi Delt and Pike have returned to campus but as previously mentioned, the Phi Delts have a new house, also away from the Fortwood community.
