Ole Miss

Just to let everyone know, I am pretty sure (not positive) that rush at Ole Miss starts this Thursday. A really good friend of mine will be rushing there and she is the one who told me when their rush starts. So good luch to anyone at Ole Miss! Ü

Alpha Gamma Delta only has a Miss. chapter at Miss. State, but I'm sure that Ole Miss has a great Greek system!

I hope that your friend has a very positive recruitment/rush experience!!

Ole Miss does start their recruitment process on Thursday, Oct 4th, bid day is Sunday Oct. 7th. The Greek System at Ole Miss is very strong, as are all the sororities. There are nine NPC chapters, AOPi, Chi O, DDD, DG, KD, Kappa, Phi Mu, Pi Phi, and Theta; averaging in the fall semester between 150-200 members. I believe there are approximately 760 PNMs signed up for recruitment this year, which is average. At one time Greek Life made up about 40% of the undergrad population.

Though rush is competitive, it is well worth it. Good luck to your friend.

Cool

Rush at Ole Miss is usually exciting. Ole Miss is a very preppy school that draws well from neighboring states. Accordingly, a higher percentage of their student body is interested in joining a frat or sorority, which makes for a highly competitive situation.

There is a Chi Omega thing at Ole Miss that has become legendary, dating back to around 1960, when two Chi Omegas from Ole Miss won Miss America titles, nearly back-to-back.

I have a friend at Ole Miss who is ChiO and will try to get an update, but she has been heads-down busy for over a week preparing for rush and I may not hear back from her until she has recouped from the process.

Ole Miss has three days of recruitment. Round one (Thursday and Friday) is Philanthropy, PNMs visit all 9 groups; round two (Saturday) is Skit Party, PNMs visit 6 groups and round three (Sunday) is Pref, PNMs can visit up to 3 groups. Bid Day is Sunday night.

I know it seems like a lot of PNMs to rush in three days. However, you must remember (I must say here that this is based on knowledge from when I was active many moons ago and may not be true today) that the sororities at Ole Miss require you to have recs. I do not mean just one rec, the packets that use to be mailed out had the number of required recs for each group listed. Some chapters require three or four recommendations to be extended a bid. Also, grades at Ole Miss are very strong and very very important. Ole Miss has many legacies go through recruitment also. Chi O, Phi Mu and KD all have chapters at just about every private and public school in Mississippi. All the chapters at Ole Miss have a strong presence in either Mississippi, as Cutehootie said in neighboring states or both.

As everyone has said in other posts before, rush at Ole Miss is competitive. In three days, there is no time to spare, but each chapter knows what they are looking for in a New Member. If you do not have the min. GPA, the rec requirements and other qualities the individual chapter is looking for, then you cannot make the cut for that chapter. I have to say that very few young ladies go through rush at Ole Miss naive to the recruitment process. The Greek system is strong at Ole Miss, because the members and the Alums in the system are very strong; in the community, academically and on campus. Actually most of the students at Ole Miss fit that description, not just in the Greek System.

Ole Miss and their Greek system are steeped in tradition.

Ole Miss has had many Miss Mississippi's and several Miss America's including a Pi Phi in the mid 80's.

This year's Miss Mississippi just graduated from Southern Miss, where she was a Phi Mu.

Another reason they can do rush quicker is that they began classes about 6 weeks ago. This plus the recs gives them a good heads up on the rushees.

While Ole Miss is a public university it reminds me more of a private school than a large state university in terms of campus size, located in a small town, and student demographics. It has a little over 10,000 students where LSU has over 30,000, but the Greek systems are about the same size.

I almost went to Ole Miss, but decided to stay in-state.

one of my friends from hs was a Theta at Ole Miss..that school has such a strong system. Truth be told, I'd be nervous to rush there, because it's so competitive and cut throat.

This is a semi-interesting article on rush, written by a non-greek and published in The Daily Mississippian, Ole Miss's campus paper.

I am not overly impressed with the article. However, I do believe in the First Amendment and the right to one's opinion.

It was a decent written article, nothing spectacular about it. Smoking, ningas... that one flew right over my head... One point I did think was a good was

"For those of you who rush "successfully" and get your
preferred organization, congrats. Just don't fall into it and
forget your individuality. "Brothers" and "sisters" are wonderful,
but so are ones who would call you that without that monthly
dues check."

Sadly enough, I know a few people like this and it is not a happy situation to be in - of course I also have seen the flip side of the friend not being greek and shunning you.
