Red face GPA QUESTION

I'm rushing in the fall as a sophomore at Texas Tech with a GPA of 3.24. My first semester I struggled a little trying getting used to everything and had a 2.3, but 2nd semester I took 16 hours and ended up with a 4.0.

But I was wondering if I'll get cut from some sororities with a 3.2 GPA. Thanks so much.

Also I have plenty of recs but I'm very shy..

One more thing, I looked up the average GPAs of the houses and the highest one is a 3.15

I read on the Texas Tech Greek Life site that sorority GPA requirements START at a 3.0.

So it is quite possible that you could be cut for grades depending on the EXACT requirements of the chapters (they are probably higher than that).

Maybe a TTU person can chime in with some more exact numbers?

Also, it depends on the GPAs of other PNMs too. If most of the PNM's GPAs are higher than that, a 3.2 doesn't look impressive.

But really, you can't change your grades, I'd make sure that you have recs and everything else you may need.

From FAQs:

What kind of grade point average do I need?

•Although the Panhellenic Association does not require a specific GPA to participate in Recruitment, the individual chapters establish their own requirements. The chapters strongly adhere to these grade requirements.
•Both high school and college grade requirements start at approximately 3.0.
•Sororities were founded primarily upon principles of academic excellence, and this is a primary consideration in membership selection.

Congratulations on working hard and getting your GPA up. That is very impressive. Your GPA is what it is, so take KSUViolet's advice, get those recs, and just go out and be yourself. Focus on what you can control. Good luck and keep up the great grades!

Is there a place on the recruitment form to list achievements and honors? If so list what the distinction is for a 4.0 (Chancellor's List, President's List, whatever it is called) and the semester (spring 09) as it can be verified and shows that you are currently on the ball. Also if you can contact your rec writers so they can mention it do so. A 4.0 is an achievement you should be proud of and mention.

Being very shy could likely be a bigger detriment than your grades

This is what I was going to recommend. While your first semester grades were, let's face it, rather shaky, you have demonstrated that you can be a scholarship asset to a chapter. Some people do struggle that first semester with adjusting to all that college offers.

A pledge sister of mine made a 2.0 the first semester and couldn't get initiated with the rest of our class (back the old semester-long days). After that she made a 4.0 every semester and served as our scholarship chair. A first semester blip can and does happen.

There may be chapters that just look at the overall GPA, but if there is any way that you can indicate your accomplishment in the spring semester I would make sure that it can stand out- give it prime real estate place on your resume. This includes both to people writing your recs and to the panhell/recruitment form.

Finally- kddani is right. Work on your communication skills in the time you have left before rush. Have some go-to topics that you are comfortable talking about and just do your very best to NOT appear shy. (Shy can be misinterpreted for aloof). You have 15 minutes to let the members know who you are and what you are about. You are just going to have to get out of the comfort zone and be the best conversationalist that you can be.

Good luck! I have friends that were in the Tech system and it is a good one.
