Planes, Trains, Buses, and Ships
I kept saying to myself that all the focus has been on airplane and airport security (which is understandable), but what about buses, trains, and cruise ships. Although initial reports say it isn't terrorist-related, now we have a man identified as Croatian slashing the throat of a Greyhound driver, and six people are dead as a result of another tragedy. My fear has been that someone or group would attempt to do something to cripple our country's transportation system. I hope this was, for lack of a better word at the moment, an "isolated" incident.

Your concern is understandable. The incident probably was isolated, yet motivated by September 11. My greater concern is in knowing that safeguarding the entire system indefinitely is probably unrealistic and will prove costly.
I hadn't imagined cruise ship attacks. Those would also pose a major blow!

maybe i'm looking at things the wrong way, but i refuse to become a hermit, because of whatever threats may exist. we were at risk before 9.11.01 and we're still at risk. the attacks have just increased most people's awareness that some people's sole motivation is to destroy this country and its ideals.
w/the travel industry offering so many unheard of deals, i wish i could afford to take advantage of the opportunities.

No one is saying we should become hermits. I've always avoided flying, and I probably still will. As bad as the events were, it did make us more aware of the fact that we have been and are at risk.
The point of the thread was to bring awareness to our other modes of transportation. I've heard of highjackings of planes for as long as I can remember, but I've never thought of the same thing happening on trains, buses, and cruise ships. I'm still planning to take a cruise in May though.

I know this is off the subject (and you can delete it), but what cruise line are you taking? And is this your first cruise? My boyfriend and I will be taking our second cruise probably in April or May.

My LS told me that not only did the greyhound get hijacked, or whatever, but so did a school bus. She's in Nashville. As far as the school bus, the driver was alone, and had just dropped off the last of the kids, then someone got in through the emergency exit, then went and picked up two other people. They finally ditched the bus, and the driver was ok. She also said something about some packages at the airport and GM that gave off some fumes that people got sick from.
Now, these are all things that could happen any time, but, I mean, really, of course we are going to pay more attention, now.
Can you really hijack a cruise ship? They move so SLOW. Not that that means anything, lol, but you know, in Ideal08's head, it's stupid to hijack something moving so slow. What you gon' do with it?
This is some tripped out mess, I'm tellin' you.

Actually, I feel safer on airplanes right now than I did before. At this point, I would rather fly to my destination than any other mode of transportation (besides driving my own car) for some of the reasons stated above. The focus has moved to airplanes and now some other forms of transit have been left with their, as my mother would say, "a$$es in the wind."
As far as cruises, I want to go on one, but I have to get past my Titanic complex first. I don't know, maybe I've seen the movie too many times, but big ships far from the land just scare the bejeezes out of me.

I have to agree with Classy Lady. I actually for some strange reason think flying is the safest mode of transportation right now. Think of all the security you need to get on a plane now. It is like walking into fort knocks. But I understand the fear but fear cannot control us. "Fear is the ally" of terrorists.

Think About This...
I don't know how many of you watch the "Today" show. About two weeks ago, Al Roker went through security at an airport before boarding a flight and he had his razor confiscated. However, he went to one of the shops at the airport and bought another razor after being checked through security.
He went back to security to show them how easily it was for him to get another razor after being checked. He wasn't trying to be a smart a$$, but he did prove a valuable point to them. Some of the shops in airports sell potentially dangerous weapons.

The only one I can think of is SPEED 2. (a stinker of a movie, if ever there was one!)
