Crazy SGRho Stereotypes
SoRHOrs,
What are some of the CRAZY stereotypes about our SoRHOrity that are rampant in your corners of the world? Some of the crazy ones that I hear on GRAMBLING's campus are:
1.) You have to have a 4.0 to pledge SGRho
2.) You have to be an education major
3.) We really pledge hard (i.e. lots and lots of HAZING!)
4.) Only will take two to three girls
5.) We don't do parties or any other "social" events.(Now you know that's a lie!) )
6.) SGRho is an honor society not a real NPHC sorority
...There are more but these are just some of the more well known ones...

Good Topic soRHOr!!! These are the ones that I have heard:
1. All SGRHO's are education majors/school teachers
2. Bookworms
3. Dark-skinned and fat

This is a good one!
1. SGRho is made up of shy women.
2. We are nerds
3. We don't know how to have fun.

Sorors..this is some funny stuff.
Since you ladies covered I think the more popular MYTHS of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. I only have one statement.
1)The only qualification to be a member of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc., is you must have a pulse. We will take your tired, your most trifling women, and of course those who were rejected from ABC, XYZ, etc. And if you are straight busted looking, acting etc., then that is the norm...not the unusual. So come one, come all. After all, you know you will get in since we are the smaller sorority. We need as many bodies as we can get, so sign up today at your local Target.

1) There is no such thing as a cute SGRho
2) There are only 5 Sigma Gamma Rho's in the nation
3) Fat
4) There is no such thing as having a big line!
5) We pledge for 365 days
6) sorority rejects

I've heard some of those mentioned above and others...
1. We're made up of rejects from other sororities.
2. We're "little girls" compared to other sororities.
3. We're very opinionated and outspoken.
4. We're the "newbreed" of NPHC (though we played a primary role in founding NPHC).
5. We have lots of attitude.
6. We're "confused".

I'm Back
Hey ladies, look who's back. Yea I've been missing in action right. I'll catch you up on that later. No I'm still not a member but I'll tell you about that too.
During my quest to find a sisterhood for me I heard Sigma Gamma Rho's were...
1. Supersmart nerdy girls
2. Ugly and all the cute ones were always in books
3. The hardest sorority to "pledge"
4. You have to have a 4.0
5. They are high class and prissy
6. They aren't as exposed as the others
7. They are Kappa sisters
8. They are more of a honors club than a sorority
9. They can step there butts off
10. They have some "Big" girls
11. You have to major in something like medicine, education, or law to join
12. They only let 3 people in at a time
13. They are more secretative and don't advertise there sorority like the others, etc

some stereotypes i hear are:
1) we pledge hard, that is why we take over so little people
2) there is no such thing as a cute sgrho

Greetings,
I have a question about that statement. Sigma Gamma Rho was not among the charter members of the NPHC. Having said that, I'm confused. If Sigma had a primary role in the founding, why wasn't she either among the charter organizations or added soon(within 1-2 years) after the founding? Might you be referring to the incorporation? PM or e-mail if you'd like.
From http://www.nphchq.org/about/history.htm:
"The Council was organized as a national coordinating body in May 1930 at Howard University (Washington, DC). Charter members include Kappa Alpha Psi and Omega Psi Phi Fraternities, Alpha Kappa Alpha, Delta Sigma Theta, and Zeta Phi Beta Sororities. In 1931, Alpha Phi Alpha and Phi Beta Sigma Fraternities joined the Council. Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority joined in 1937 and Iota Phi Theta Fraternity completed the list of member organizations in 1997.
The stated purpose and mission of the organization in 1930 was "Unanimity of thought and action as far as possible in the conduct of Greek letter collegiate fraternities and sororities, and to consider problems of mutual interest to its member organizations." Early in 1937, the organization was incorporated under the laws of the State of Illinois and became known as "The National Pan-Hellenic Council, Incorporated.""
Getting back to the topic @ hand if I may, the stereotypes i've heard are:
~ Sigma Gamma Rho is made up of rejects from other sororities.
~ No one has ever heard of Sigma Gamma Rho
~ Overweight/"healthy"/fat/perpetually full figured

From our historical archives:
Sigma Gamma Rho, one of the organizers of the Pan-Hellenic Council, voluntarily withdrew its membership at the Sixth Boule (1930), to meet the campus chapter quota as prescribed by the Constitution drawn up by the NPHC. It was readmitted 5 February 1937.
Also in the historical archives:
Representatives of Sigma Gamma Rho, Alpha Kappa Alpha and Delta Sigma Theta Sororities and Kappa Alpha Psi, Alpha Phi Alpha and Omega Psi Phi Fraternities met in Indianapolis, 27-30 December 1928 to establish a Pan-Hellenic Council.
So they were among the charters, but they voluntarily withdrew because of their own high standards (but of course), then came back in February 1937.
EEEEEEEEEEEEEEE-Yip!!! to my SoRHOrs!!!!
