Good luck to you.

I'd never use the term "frat" among fraternity members - not cool.

All groups accept members in the spring - in fact I think Chico has "deferred" rush until Spring term.

Chico has had a series of nasty hazing/drinking problems in the chapters, and the school is cracking down. Be prepared, if a chapter (which will assure you during rush that they don't haze) starts unreasonable hazing, to say "if you continue, I'll be in the dean's office tomorrow morning." Be a man and help stop the ignorant and harmful hazers. Check the "Risk management" section of this forum for previous posts on Chico.

The "local" fraternities at Chico (those not affiliated with chapters at lots of other campuses) will be cheaper, but the "nationals" will give you lifetime benefits, more good programs, a magazine, etc. Go national if you can.

Fraternity membership is a great way to enjoy college life and make friends.

Last summer I visited Chico and Sac State - Chico is more a college town, although the fraternity houses are very crummy and stuck amongst the local civilians/citizens. SS is in a huge town, and there aren't many fraternity houses.

Best wishes. Let us know what happens.

Yea the fraternities have deferred rush this year...that is among the groups that aren't suspended.

I go to Chico State, and its not as horrible as Hoosier or the rest of GC would like you to believe. Despite all the bad press it's really a fun place to live - Chico is a great little town and the people here are very friendly.

As for fraternity houses being crappy - they are just about as crappy as the rest of the student houses. It's a college town and most student's havent learned how to take care of a house yet.

I know which fraternity is the best in my eyes, but I'm not about to start that kind of stuff here. I encourage you to look into rush no matter what school you end up going to. Although please educate yourself a little more on the greek system and don't let anyone catch you saying "frat" or expect to get a bid because you like to party.

We have all of those things (lifetime benefits, good programs, and a magazine), and we're local. Being national doesn't automatically make everything sparkly and wonderful. Go wherever your heart tells you to go, even if it is local.

Dude, two bits of advice here:

1) Turn off your caps lock.

2) If you're looking for a fraternity just to party, which that statement implies you are, then don't bother joining.

I was willing to give some advice... however after this post, I've decided to hold my tongue.

Also, as the president of an local fraternity let me give you one piece of advice, it's actually part of a speech I gave to my actives tonight during our meeting, to give it context basically some of our newest members have been droping the ball lately and not following through on thier responsabilities and basically I said "I'm really disappointed in you right now, when you pledge you become my 'brother' but you aren't really my Brother until your there putting in the work right along side me as equals. I may be the president but I put in more work then you understand and my Brothers show up and work with me and get things done, those of you who just show up for the parties or the girls are my brothers in name only."

So a piece of advice, if you aren't willing to put in the work and be down to ride, don't even waste your time because you won't get anything from joining a fraternity and they won't get anything from you. My best friend from high school joined SAE at CSU Fullerton, was active for a semester after he was initiated and then basically dropped it because he was only doing it to get into the parties for free and he had made his friends while he was active and didn't feel he wanted to be part of the fraternity anymore. It really made me sad to hear him say this because I love my Brothers more then anything and it would be real easy to put myself in the shoes of the people in his chapter that were working really hard to make things go well. I honestly think they wasted his time by pledging/initiating him and that he wasted 3 + 1/2 years of his life by not taking full advantage of the opportunities offered by being an active brother.

So, your purpose in picking a school is for the party scene? Sounds like you'll have a great future ahead of you.

ITS FUNNY THAT BECAUSE I ASKED A QUESTION ABOUT PATRYING SOME ASSUMED THAT WAS MY SOLE PURPOSE FOR JOINING A FRATERNITY. I WANT TO GO TO COLLEGE AND HAVE A GOOD TIME, AND I MEAN A REALLY GOOD TIME, SO HOW MUCH A FRATERNITY PARTIES WILL INFLUENCE MY FINAL DECISION, IS THAT WRONG?

WHEN JOINING A FRATERNITY WHAT STUFF DO YOU HAVE TO DO? IM NOT TALKING ABOUT HAZING AND STUFF BUT LIKE YOU SAID PEOPLE WERENT DOING THEIR RESPONSIBILITIES. LIKE COMMUNITY STUFF? CUZ WHAT IF PEOPLE HAVE TO WORK, GO HOME FOR THE WEEKEND, ETC.

sorry about the caps lock i forgot

i dont know how to find this out any other way so respectfully if you go to chico or sac state which fraternity are you in? just by looking on-line about sacramento i was interested in
Kappa Sigma
Sigma Pi
Tao Kappa Epsilon
Or are any of you guys brothers with them?

A couple of things - Yes I agree that local groups can be just as great and amazing as national groups. Unfortunatley here at Chico State, local fraternities are less than stellar and have major risk management issues IMO.

Secondly, "thaloccsta", don't bother rushing here at Chico state with this attitude...of the three fraternities you mentioned we only have Sigma Pi here and I will tell you right now they won't want you. I am really good friends with most of that chapter and they have a history of building strong members and had to make a huge effort to "weed out" the drunk stupid kids in order to become a great chapter. In fact I can honestly say that at Chico state all the fraternities aren't going to want any "party-animal" pledges because the greek system is trying SOOOO HARD to prove to everyone that we are better than that.

You aren't going to get any other or better advice on this message board, so why don't you just relax and focus on which school you want to go to and settling in first. Maybe be thinking about your academic career over how "sick" the parties here or at sac state are.
