Philanthropy
I was wondering if any of you would have any ideas as to what to do for philanthropy during recruitment events. In the past our philanthropy days havent been too structured so I was trying to figure out something fun and interesting to do this year. Any ideas would be of greattttt help.

Knowing what your philanthropy is would be a help...also what you've done in the past.

This past year we had the girls help make stars for a fundraiser we were having for Special Olympics.
The leadership consultant told me that was a big no-no and I have no idea what they have done in years past (I came into this position with nothing to work with).
Anyways, our two philanthropies are the Special Olympics and the S. June Smith Center, a center for children with developmental disabilities and their families. I have a DVD that they sent me, so would you suggest playing it on philanthropy day? It's like 5 minutes tops.

Hm, what were the stars used for? Why did the consultant say you couldn't use them? Because they were for a fundraiser and not directly for philanthropy?
Maybe you could make something cool for the Special Olympics participants, a little gift for them or something. Perhaps you could make boxes to hold or display their medals, for example?
I wouldn't show the video unless it's focused on the relationship between your sorority and the philanthropy. On the other hand, if the other groups on your campus show videos it might be a good idea. hmm...

Some ideas
Crafts!!!! Something easy enough to allow conversation, small enough for many of them to be of use, and simple enough for the ditziest of us to do. I know my chapter would make flash cards or alphabet cards using puff paint to make braille for the school our philanthropy worked with (Service for Sight). Maybe your could have the girls make something along those lines? Here's one idea: Get postcard sized pieces of fun foam (it has so many different names, the very thin sheets of foam that come in many colors?) and a number of the buckets of fun foam stickers (look for ones in a theme that go with you Sorority--safari for Phi Mu, ocean for DG or DDD, etc) and fun foam alphabet stickers or puff paint. I'm not sure how big your recruitment events are, but assign each table a letter or a few to do. On each card write the letter in the puff paint/sticker (so the kids can both SEE and FEEL the letters) and affix a sticker or two that correspond with that letter (a lion for the letter L, for example). Since summer day camps are wrapping up, you should be able to get these supplies for cheap at your local craft store. If not, try online.
Show the video if that is what most of the chapters do at your school. If not, do you have pictures from your philanthropy events? Have a group of sisters work on making posters (I know Panhell rules very in regards to allowable posters, so check first) for each event that can be diplayed around the room or used as table markers.
Are any of your sisters scrapbookers? If so, as them to donate their scrapbooks to display during the event. Always a nice touch.

Well I'd definitely check with your leadership consultant for ideas since that's part of what they are usually there for.
Is there a charity or agency in your area that could use your help making something they give away? I'm thinking along the lines of school supplies for kids being meted out (three pencils, box of crayons, etc.) which relates to helping kids ala S. June Smith. There may also be a group who helps victims of domestic violence or homelessness, and they put together kits for those they serve, which perhaps y'all could do as a philanthropy activity? Same goes for police, fire and ambulance, sometimes they give something to children to help them cope with an emergency, or may know of an agency that does.
I also like breathesgelatin's suggestions of something to give away to the athletes in Special Olympics. Even decorating a picture frame from the dollar store or a small photo album for a keepsake gift would be nice. Even buying some really inexpensive wrist or headbands (the terry cloth kind), or water bottles to decorate could be good. If you can get an Olympian to come and speak who any of you have worked with that could really showcase ASA's involvement and support of Special Olympics.
If a member can speak on how being involved in your philanthropy has affected her can always be moving and touching (if that is the campus norm).

Isn't Special Olympics such a great cause, don't you think?
If you're thinking of using it again for your cause, you might like to check out these resources on their website ( http://www.specialolympics.org/community/index.html ). Hopefully it will help you out in planing your next fundraiser.
So do you think you'll try a fundraiser again?

Locally we knit scarves to send to Boise for the Olympians to wear in the last Special Olympics. Knitting scarves takes time, but it could be used as a way to get women involved during informal recruitment. I can't count the number of times people have come up to me because I've got something on my kneedles and they want to learn. You could always finish the main scarf and have tassels attached at a recruitment event, or make pompoms.
