PRESS RELEASE - FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE AND DISTRIBUTION
GEORGETOWN CHAPTER OF NATIONAL SERVICE FRATERNITY INDUCTS HONORARY MEMBER
WASHINGTON, DC —
Ky Adderley, an emerging pioneer in urban education and Executive Director of of Team & Family Services for KIPP:NYC, has been chosen as an honorary member of Alpha Phi Omega National Service Fraternity and will be initiated in a ceremony on Saturday, March 21, 2009 at Georgetown University.
Adderley is the founding principal of the KIPP: AMP public charter school in Brooklyn, New York. KIPP (Knowledge is Power Program) is the name of the network of charter schools of which AMP (Always Mentally Prepared) is a member. Prior to joining KIPP, Adderley taught in the District of Columbia Public Schools through the Teach for America program, where he earned the distinction of New Teacher of the Year. Adderley earned Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees from Georgetown University, where he was an All-American and captain of the varsity track and field team.
Mu Alpha Chapter at Georgetown University was chartered into Alpha Phi Omega National Service Fraternity on May 20, 1956. Since that date, the chapter has maintained a positive presence throughout the campus and surrounding community with projects such as the van escort program which drives students home safely from the library on weeknights; a food delivery program for people living with AIDS and other terminal illnesses; tutoring at Calvin Coolidge High School in the District; and recreation programs for children with disabilities. The chapter currently has 94 members and over 1,000 alumni, including former President of the United States William Jefferson Clinton, documentary filmmaker St. Claire Bourne, former United States Assistant Secretary of State for Consular Affairs Maura Harty, and current President of Georgetown University John J. DeGioia.
Alpha Phi Omega is a National Coed Service Fraternity — college students gathered together in an organization based on fraternalism and founded on the principles of the Boy Scouts of America. Its purpose is to develop leadership, promote friendship and provide service to humanity. Since 1925, more than 367,000 students have chosen Alpha Phi Omega, making the Fraternity the nation’s largest Greek-letter fraternity. Notable members include First Lady Michelle Obama, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, and Secretary of Defense Robert Gates.
