Question How do you feel when...

You see Black women in traditionally White or Latina sororities? I know it was a BIG issue @ my school and Black women who took that route were seen as traitors. I personally take a second glance but I believe that everyone has the right to go where they feel comfortable. But I don't think I would ever feel comfortable around a whole bunch of White women. I'm not sure how I would feel about a Latina sorority.

I don't have that problem because I attend a predominately black university so the only GLO's on our campus are Black. However, if I was on another institutional setting and saw this I don't think I would be too upset or even excited over it because everyone has the right to become and do whatever they please. Everything should have to be about race in today's society. Because truth be told, race is an undefined term. Everything is not black and white. People should go with whats in their hearts and not what is right according to society.

Thumbs down

I think it is sad. I cannot tell anyone what to do, but our founders of all 4 sororities started these great orgs with BLACK WOMEN in mind. There is nothing a white or latina sorority can offer me. I think a Black woman has deep issues if she chooses to past up one of the 4 sororities in the NPHC. We each have something to offer that makes us unique. How could you not look at Zeta, who was the FIRST to charter in Africa? How could you not look at SGRho who was the first to charter at a white university? I think there is a lot of self-hate. How could you not look at any one of them. I read an article about a "bi-racial" woman in Alabama who pledged a white sorority and she really thought she did something. I was amazed by the article, but since she is biracial she may not have had a close relationship with the Black Community. I am glad I am a Finer Woman who had the opportunity to PLEDGE the best! Just my opinion!

I could care less. I've been out of school many years, and back in the day we had a few to choose another path. Being inmature we used to call them Oreos and sell-outs, but now I could care less. I also could care less about the many black men dating white girls.

doesn't really matter

I attend a predominantly white school, where bglos are extremely small (we have 6 black greeks between 3 orgs). I think its a non-issue, I mean I don't feel betrayed or anything because it's their personal choice. Not everyone wants to be in a bglo, so let them do their thing.

Arrow Not my business...

I attend a predominantly hispanic university. We already have a low black greek population, so most people really don't care. I personally don't care. Do whatever floats your boat.

I guess the mentality (at least it is among my friends and I) is that we personally have way too many things to be worried about than to sit and actually have a problem/worry about whether or not this person joined a BGLO or not.

It makes no difference to me if an African American woman wishes to join an NPC sorority, just as it makes no difference if a Latina/Asian/Caucasian woman wants to join an NPHC sorority. Everyone should find their niche, to "get in where they fit in" so to speak. If a sister decides for whatever reason that she'd rather be a member of Alpha Chi Omega than Zeta Phi Beta, I see no difference between that choice and if she'd chosen Alpha Kappa Alpha instead of Zeta Phi Beta.

*shrug*

I've also noticed that there are a lot of multicultural sororities popping up. A girl on my campus is trying to start another one. We currently have about 15+ culturally based sororities and fraternities on campus and I'm trying to figure out why? Everyone basically does the same thing what else is there? And there is nothing about Zeta or any organization for that matter that says we aren't multicultural. The chapter I came in had a White Soror and the chapter I'm in now has a Columbian Soror.

not my business, but..why???

I go to school at a very, very white campus. African Amrican's make up less than 1% of the total school's population. So...for the most part all the blacks tend to know each other and stick together.

This past week, all the GLO's were having their Rush, and the girls were seen all around campus going to the various houses and attending the various events and activities......Low and behold, there they were......3 sista's right along with them, in one of the mini groups going around campus.

At first, I just thought, "jali0004, that is none of your business or concern", but I have to ask, what would make a black woman join one of these groups? Is she looking for a college experience a BGLO doesn't offer?? I just don't get it. I came to Minnesota fro my education, not to lose my sense of cultural identity. But that's just me. I think it's harder to understand where women (and men) who are black and join a GLO are coming from when you attend a Predominately white college or university. It's so few of us here, why woulddn't they want to associate with us?? But here's a question for us in BGLO's: would you want "them" in your organization anyway???

Sorry for the rambling, but I just don't understand it .....

I think you answered the question in the title of your post. :-)

I'm not being facetious. Seriously, what does it take away from you as a Black woman, or from your organization (if you're a member of BGLO) if someone decides for whatever reason she wants to join an NPC sorority? Why should that person be looked any differently because they decided to join an NPC sorority?

What do you know about these women and their backgrounds? Is it possible that they have friends across all racial lines, and they wish to rush the same sororities as their friends? Perhaps they went through rush just because they were curious, not because they were turning up their noses at NPHC organizations. Maybe they grew up in predominately white situations and feel more comfortable there. *shrug*

My point is, people have a multitude of reasons for why they decide to affilate with other organizations, and it's not up to us to judge them or question those reasons. We can agree or disagree, but ultimately, it really isn't any of our business, and most importantly, it doesn't take anything away from the specialness and beauty of the Divine Nine if someone decides that alliance isn't for them.
