Kappa to be named New York Senator
According to sources this morning, a current New York House of Rep. member will be named today to replace Hillary Clinton as New York Senator. Kirsten Gillibrand, a graduate of Dartmouth in 1988 and a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma there, will become New York's Junior Senator.
Gillibrand is a vocal proponent of Greek life and is supporting the legislation to allow ANY money given to fraternity or sorority housing to be totally tax-deductible. Currently, only money used for educational purposes (libraries, computers) can be deducted.
Here is the question: I know that Blanche Lincoln from Arkansas is a Chi O, and I believe Claire McCaskill from Missouri is a sorority member. But--how many female U.S. Senators are there, and which ones are NPC members? I know we look at this issue occasionally, but there were many new members elected recently. Like, how about the new Senator from North Carolina who replaced Tri Delt Liddy Dole?

That's a good question and along with that, are there any NPCers serving in the House?

NPC Women Website
Great link from npcwomen.org
of past and present NPC women in all categories who have a 'known name.'
No specific GLO listed, but it's a good start.

Here are a few additional Senators who are sorority members:
California's Barbara Boxer is a Delta Phi Epsilon from Brooklyn College
Texas' Kay Bailey Hutchison is a Pi Beta Phi from U. of Texas
Louisiana's Mary Landrieu is a Delta Gamma from Louisiana State
Arkansas' Blanch Lincoln is a Chi Omega from U. Arkansas
Alaska's Lisa Murkowsky is a Pi Beta Phi from Willamette
Missouri's Claire McCaskill is a Kappa Alpha Theta from U. of Missouri
Here are some other possibilities:
Washington's Maria Cantwell attended Miami University; Maine's Susan Collins attended St. Lawrence; North Carolina's Kay Hagan attended Florida State; Minnesota's Amy Klobuchar attended Yale; Washington's Patty Murray attended Washington State, Montana's Jeanne Shaheen attended Shippensburg, Maine's Olympia Snowe attended U. Maine and Michigan's EDebby Stabenow attended Michigan State.
Dianne Feinstein graduated from Stanford before sororities returned and Barbara Mikulski attended Mt. St. Agnes so neither are likely to be sorority women unless intitated as alumnae.
Any sleuths who can track down some of the above?

According to this blog, Debbie Stabenow went through rush but didn't get a bid. It sounds like it was informal recruitment...

It's interesting how many of these women joined top tier chapters...
...is it something with wealth that they already had obtained or something with their personality?
Theta at Missouri (I think, is pretty good I'm told), Founding Chi-O Chapter at Arkansas, and Pi Phi at Texas are all great chapters.

Not sure what you're getting at. Do you mean, "Did membership in a top tier chapter make these women great or did the top tier chapters select them because they knew these women would achieve great things?"

Nope, it's a stupid comment either way.

Well yeah...
But anyways, based on what I know about Kirsten Gillibrand, I'm excited she was chosen.

It is true that those are the best chapters on campus. Did the chapters greatness mold these great women or were they great before they became great and that's why they were chosen?

I'm sure they were probably "go getter" types BEFORE they were Greek. Most politicians have had that type of personality to begin with.
Greek Life is great and all, but I don't think it's something that determines whether one is going to be successful in politics (top chapter or not).
The greatness of a chapter doesn't really have the power to "mold" someone into a greater woman. I think you're giving Greek Life *gasp* too much credit here.
I mean, there are plenty of successful politicians who weren't Greek at ALL at their respective schools.
