Strange subject I know... But I was reading a Daredevil Comic Book (issue #109) and noticed on the right side of the cover the public motto of Sigma Chi - In Hoc Signo Vinces. Does anyone have any insight to what this refers to? Its meaning within the comic, or connection to an author, artist, or character? I am a Sigma Chi so I obviously understand the meaning behind the phrase and its origins as far as Sigma Chi is concerned, but really just want to know why this showed up in this situation.

If you have any insight, please let me know. Thanks.

It's the motto of several fraternal organizations: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/In_hoc_..._organizations

To be honest, it's somewhat of a cliche in Latin. It could mean anything in the storyline or to the Daredevil creative team.

Yeah, I understand the phrase is in no way exclusive to Sigs. I was more just wondering if someone knew of this already or had read this book and found a reference to it in the book itself. And like you said, could just be something the author thought was kind of cool/different to include with no "deeper meaning" because it is a common Latin phrase regarding justice and religion.

The most well known Sigma Chi I know of is comic strip artist Milt Caniff. He did artwork for Sigma Chi, and is best known for the classic adventure strips "Terry and the Pirates" and "Steve Canyon".

One of the characters in "Terry & the Pirates", Pay Ryan, was shown to be a Sigma Chi, and his membership pin was used in one of the early storylines. Not sure if he used SC is anyway in Steve Canyon.

I can't tell from your post whether you actually read the comic or just the cover. I'm wondering if there's anything in the story line that puts the use of the motto in a context.
