Founded in 1922 on the principles of sisterhood, education, and community service, Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. is a non-profit organization with over 300 chapters worldwide. The Clarksville chapter of Sigma Gamma Rho, Iota Pi Sigma, has served the Middle Tennessee area for a number of years, hosting various activities throughout. The awarding of educational scholarships and grants has been an integral part of the chapter’s community service activity for these years. In keeping with that tradition as well as our organization’s slogan, “Greater Service, Greater Progress”, we are working to expand our educational reach into the community.
The Iota Pi Sigma chapter, along with the Nu Zeta chapter (Austin Peay State University) of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc., will host the “It’s in the Bag,” a nationwide symposium for young people in the risky business of growing up, Saturday March 8, 2008 at First Assembly of God Church, 1186 Fort Campbell Blvd.; 11-2 p.m. This year’s theme is, “Framing Excellence through Persistence rather than Resistance.”
“It’s in the Bag,” focuses on critical issues that continue to face local community youth. As research continues to show “discipline” to be a major issue facing America’s public schools and communities today, Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority’s agenda for this year’s symposium provides for a forum through which our sorority and the community can work together in helping our young people cope with some of the peer-pressuring challenges they face on a daily basis. The agenda offers the opportunity for Sigma Gamma Rho and the community to come together to address some of the prevelant concerns that negatively impact our youth.
Now in its 11th year, the 2008 offering of “It’s in the Bag” will focus on encouraging our youth to move persistently toward their dreams and aspirations. Featured will be youth talent presentations and words of advice and encouragement from local personalities.Youth, grades 8-12, and parents are encouraged to attend.
