reactivating as an undergrad?

I have some questions... I might be forced to deactivate soon, because my time/finances are running a bit short and I just don't have the energy or money or time to give phi mu what it deserves.

I'm currently an active in my chapter, but should I deactivate, how would I go about reactivating? Is this possible to do as an undergrad?

Thanks.

Is this your first semester as an active?

Before "deactivating", I would write down your priorities, and make decisions carefully. Did you consider the time/money it would take, before you initiated? I just think to deactivate during your first semester sends a bad signal to the chapter. Your space could have been occupied by someone who COULD devote what was needed to the sorority.

I don't want to sound mean, but I honestly cannot see someone leaving first semester, then coming back when they "have more time" or money. If there is a financial issue, can you work out a payment plan? Get a small job? Even making $50 a week should help.

That being said, how much paraphenelia do you own? Are you going to continue to wear your letters? I don't know what's kosher at your chapter, but be aware that you may not be received well.

That doesn't really answer my question, but let me explain a little bit more...

Yes, this is my first semester in the chapter. And no, it's not a question of "filling space" - the house is nowhere near house total, we're a small chapter that has a lot of competition for recruitment just because of the way the Greek system here is structured.
I AM on a payment plan and have a work study job here at school, but my financial and academic circumstances changed over the summer - I didn't get more than enough money just to live on when I thought I would make enough to actually save. It's still not enough. Be being able to eat and keeping my scholarships at this point are a little bit more of a priority than Greek life. Yes, my situation is that dire - I cannot afford the semester dues (which are very high for our chapter considering we don't have a live-in house, just a lodge to hold meetings in)

And as far as things I have, I pretty much only have a set of letters I was willed and a tote bag with letters on it that my big gave me. And a lot of t-shirts, of course.

You should really speak to your chapter or advisor about this. Be aware that if someone can successfully re-activate after de-activating (while a collegiate), there may be quota issues, back-dues, and a requirement to fulfill other obligations that have accrued (such as living in house, etc.).

Maybe someone here has personal knowledge of your GLO's policies, and can help you out too.

This is indeed a icky situation.

Being a sister, I know what you are up against. I URGE you strongly to talk to your chapter adviser and collegiate operations director BEFORE you make an decision.

At this point, there is really no "deactivation" option like I think you are envisioning. It would involve relinquishing your membership, and I don't really think that is what you truly want.

There are other options, but you must discuss this with your adviser and area collegiate operations director.

Do you have a special status or hardship option? (If that's too nosy of a question, just let me know.)

Yes we have interim membership status. It is generally for medical hardships, overseas studies, etc. It is only available for one year.

This thread leads me to believe that there IS an option I'm looking for, but I'm just not sure how to go about it.

I'm going to talk to the rest of exec board (yep, i'm exec, which is adding to the mess) and see if they can work anything out for me. Judging by the responses from my sisters so far, none of them want to see me go and are very much willing to work with me. We'll see.

That option is available as an ALUMNA. There is expense involved ... reinstatement fee and a unanimous vote by National Council.

You really need to talk to your area collegiate operations director. If you need help finding out who that is, let me know.
