Campus Nicknames

Something that is becoming more and more popular is the use of Sig Nu, excluding the oh-so-hard-to-say "ma" from the organization's name. Is this something happening elsewhere as well? Does anyone else feel cheated when this happen?

Example: The Alpha Sigma Alphas, one of my favorite sororities while attending UCA, decided to design a welcome mat for the House. "Great!", I think. Then my stomach drops when I read SIG NU on it. Great gesture, ladies... but pay attention! Do we call ourselves "Sig Nu" around here? Negative.

Something personal, I guess. I just always thought it was that extra syllable that helped keep us distinguished from Sig Ep, Sig Tau, Phi Sig, and whoever else. The extra syllable meant more of a man or commitment or something... hell, I don't know. You won't ever see me saying "I am a Sig Nu..."

MA!

On behalf of the ASAs, I apologize!

I remember vividly getting the same lecture from a Sigma Chi - they HATED being called Sig Chi - they preferred either Sigma Chi or Sigs.

All you can do is make your preference known, and hopefully people will get it. But if you're on campus w/ Sig Ep, Sig Tau, Phi Sig...yeah, it's going to happen.

I can honestly say that on our campus, being that we had SigEps, SigChis, SigPis, SigTaus, DeltaSigs, AlphaSigs, PhiSigs, SigKaps, and TriSigs (yes, that's what they called themselves), y'all would have mostly likely been called SigNus. I just don't think it's that big of deal...but if it is to you, I guess, like 33girl said, you better make it known.

Well, I'm an "old-balls-alumnus" now , but I just wondered if this was a newer trend nationwide... it just makes me cringe. And I don't hear from any other Sigma Nus on this subject, so I am assuming this is generally the case...

And don't get me wrong - eternal love for my ladybugs till I die. I used to do an uncanny phoenix impersonation. you'd have been proud.
