				BGLO Conferences: Great PR!

I've been debating about posting this, but why not?
While attending our Regional Conference, a few sorors and I were sitting in the bar. Sorors in attendance, you know the one. It was a great way of seeing sorors and others pass by.
There was another convention at the hotel. This convention featured mainly Caucasian men. After one of the events, I believe Saturday night, sorors, of course were dressed very nicely in their evening attire. When getting the courage (after his drinks set in), one man approached our table. He asked what organization we were members of...the purpose...were we still in college, etc. (the usual). He was just in AWW! He told us he had not seen anything like it before. He said that he and his conference attendees kept seeing some, then the flow would stop. Then, they'd see more and more and more! (Translation: They hadn't seen THAT many beautiful AF AM women in one place). He said he was from Wisconsin and would make his way to Detroit in July. (yeah right) LOL
Then, I think back to Boule in Nashville. Sorors had taken over "The Grand Ole Opry". A lady in one of the restaurants (a sista) told us she HAD to bring her children to work with her to see ANOTHER side of African Americans. She said her kids were only exposed to certain images in our community. She wanted to show them professional, educated, well dressed, well spoken women...not just one or 2, but THOUSANDS!

Can you think of any stories from your experiences at your own Regional, District, Boule, or National Conventions that are worth sharing?

I'm sure members of the fraternities have some. Our males need to see you all!

   | In Nashville I happened to be on the elevator with a man and he asked some of the same questions that the men from Wisconsin asked. He seemed to be very impressed when I told him the Sorority was nearly 100 years old, we were made up of predominantly Black women, etc., etc.

Now why we are an anomaly or enigma STILL, I dunno - but then again, maybe that's not such a bad thing.

				 GREAT THREAD!

No one actually came up to us and spoke up, but taxi drivers, airport security and attendees, etc. kept asking about who we were because they saw so many women sporting pink & green. I was carrying my new umbrella (which I had the pleasure of using today) and a guard at the security checkpoint said, "Who are you ladies? I've seen SOOOOO many of those pink & green umbrellas this weekend!" Of course I had to reply, "Only the FIRST & FINEST Sorority in the world!"
I remember a great display of sisterhood last year on our way back from Regional. We were on the plane and had a GREAT crew of flight attendants. They let us cut loose and we began a round of chants and had a grand ol' time! It's always wonderful when I am with my Sorors. I am sure that it is a shock to the system when people see so many of us all in one place. Even I am in awe when I see so many of my Sorors of ALL ages in one place, displaying the love that we all share for this great sorority.

			Great thread!
I remember back in 02 at Boule in Miami. I was sitting by myself in the lobby and a white couple from Oregon (I think) approached me and asked me question after question about all of us ladies in blue. The more I answered, the more they questioned. I did not mind answering and they asked me to go to dinner with them because they had more questions (they treated ) I gave them a history of all the 4 sororities, where and how founded, things that we do, etc. and they were just AMAZED that such organizations existed.

				It wasn't my convention....

I was being nosey a few weeks ago when the Sigmas had their regionals here. I ran into one of my classmates from school who works at the hotel they were staying. She brought up a good point and said "It's nice to see good looking, college-educated Black men".
And she's right!

And she's right! | I just said the same thing at the recent Kappa Western Province Council.

we have our monthly meetings in downtown Brooklyn - so between BAM and being in the shopping areas with para, we always get the high school kids saying "which sorority are you guys?" and again it's great PR as far as seeing black people in professional attire aside from church or work.
and come on, non-greeks who see a flock of men/women in greek letters wanna know what's going on.

i remember one little boy (maybe 7 or 8) saying in the mall "mommy, you should be one of those!" it was cute

Kapital PHINUst and other men of Kappa Alpha Psi, Kudos to you! I was driving down the street today and saw a *billboard* advertising your fraternity's work in the community. Yes, an actual *billboard*. Kudos!
