Candle Passings and Pinning
In the Greek Life forum I've noticed a lot of discussion about pinning, laveleiring, and candle passings! So I was curious how your chapters do it! Do you have a ceremony? Do you give your letters to a guy too?
In my chapter we have candle passings. So if a sister gets engaged she will notify her Big Sis and then at meeting we'll announce that we have a candle passing. Everyone will gather around is a circle, holding hands, singing Chi-O songs. The first time the candle goes around symbolizes friendship, second time is promised, third time engagement, and fourth pregnancy ! Whoever blows out the candle is the person who was promised/engaged.
So that's how we do it here! Can't wait to hear all your stories!

The way ours work is 1st is friendship, 2nd is lavaliering, 3rd is pinning, and 4th is engagement. On Bid Day, we had a candlelight ceremony. It turns out that one of the girls had gotten engaged over the summer but waited to tell everyone because she wanted to share it with the new members! It was sooooo sweet!

That sounds like a blast! Too bad they probably can't do that sort of thing anymore for fear of Hazing Violations
Thanks for clarifying
Hoot Hoot have a happy day!

Is the pearl thing a chapter, XO, or greek thing? None of you guys mentioned it, so maybe it's a chapter thing. I thought before it was XO or greek wide. Hmm.

I think the pearl is commonly known as the gemstone for a "promise" ring. At least that's what my ex told me

We call it a candlelight also..basically whoever thelucky girl is leaves a candle outside the presidents door, and then we stand in a circle, and sing "I love you truly"..we do 1st-going stead, 2nd-pinned or promised, 3rd-engaged, 4th-married, 5th-pregnant..we always do it after the general chapter meeting, before going to active.

ISU,
That happened to me, too! I broke up with the guy almost a year after the lavaliering, and it never really came up about giving it back. There were too many other issues and it was sad, that i don't think a little thing like that was tops on our mind. Now, if my current boyfriend knew I still had it, I don't think he would be very pleased!!!

Personally I'd give the guy back his pin and/or lavalier! Just out of respect...ya know! It's hard enough being through with a relationship let alone having a reminder...especially one that has no meaning to you (his letters/pin).
I was promised by a non-greek. I kept the ring but I later traded it in for a bigger diamond on a chain LOL! Hey, I paid for most of that dang promise ring anyway!!!
My mom still has my father's pin...I think that's really neat. Maybe someday I'll have my own Sig Ep pin (sigh)!
Sisterly Love,
Hootie
PS. I'm semi-starting a relationship with a Sig Ep (my first Fraternity boy experience). So in the next few weeks or month I may be asking you all for help or advice! Wish me luck :P

Ours was about the same! First for lavaliere, second for pinning/ promise and third for engagement. let me tell you, I'm glad we didn't have many engagements because with a big chapter, it took FOREVER for the candle to get around! We would sing about 3 different songs and about 3 or more times through each!

Has anyone here been lavaliered or pinned? What do you do with it if you break up? I know a pin - you would give back to the guy but what about a lavalier - do you give that back too?
PS- FYI- I did not give mine back and the ex was not mad about it or even asked for it back. I still have the lavalier- I think it will be a neat thing to show my son or daughter some day if they go greek.

When my ex (Sig Ep) and I broke up, he wanted his drop back, which was fine with me...the funny part is he had dropped me like a month before I broke up with him, so I felt kinda bad taking it to begin with. It was in the midst of all of the....um, drama, shall we call it, so everyone was a little too peroccupied to give a candlelight. That kinda sucks. But on the bright side, I just went on a date with a very nice Sig Ep (yup, another one) last night, which unfortunately might cause some gossip on camups...So Hootie, you and I are in the same boat kinda! Wish me luck!

Hey Ladies!!! I go to UCF and at our chapter we all get into a circle for our candle pass and sing "Shades." It goes around once for a lavalier. The second time around means that someone got pinned and the third means someone gets engaged.

At KSU it was 1st time around = lavaliered, 2nd time around = pinned, 3rd = engaged. We had a little song we sang, "Chi O, with her eyes aglow..." I forget the rest of the words. One time at formal when I was a freshman (yikes, this would be ca. Fall '90 or Spring '91!!) the guy set up the candlelight, as we called it. It went around 3 times, and then he stepped up to the circle behind his girlfriend, grabbed the candle, blew it out, and then dropped to his knee in front of everyone. Needless to say, there wasn't a dry eye in the house!!!! Oh, I remember the song, "Chi O with her eyes aglow, candle passed around, so the world will know she has a true love...wonder who she is tonight..."

My hubby, a Delt, was lavaliered to a DG before we were dating. It actually started out as a joke to make this guy she was hanging out with mad, but then she and my hubby started dating seriously and it stuck. Anyway, he got it back when they broke up, and after we started dating he knew he wanted to lavalier me....since he would never want me to think I got the same lavalier that she had worn, one night we were hanging out at the house and he actually sat there in front of me and destroyed the lavalier with pliers...I was pretty sure then that I was going to be getting one of my own, and just a few weeks later, I did. Over time, I also got a couple things he never gave anyone else...his badge and a diamond ring!!
A lot of the guys used to sell used lavaliers to other guys....I guess it is better than giving your new girl your ex's.
