Your ASA experience...

Since I'm in a permanent "Hooray for ASA" mood and it's quiet over here, I thought I would start another thread.

What has your ASA experience been like? When did you join? What kinds of things did you do as a collegian and as an alumna? Any favorite memories to share?

Since I'm so new to the sorority, I want to hear everything!

My ASA experience has been a great one. I joined in March 02. My favorite memory was our Destination Unknown trip where the social committee planned a trip and all the rest of the sisters just got on the bus and went. We ended up in Dallas! It was lots and lots of fun. As an alum. I'm still trying to get involved. As a collegian I was extremely involved.

My experience was mixed, but it was my own fault. I pledged with 2 of my best friends from freshman year - we weren't a "package deal", but it just fell out that way. So, while everyone else had made friends in the pledge class/sorority, I just made acquaintances, since I already HAD my friends.

We stuck together during our pledge period and the rest of soph. year (most people pledged as sophs way back then). Unfortunately, one got engaged and transferred to her fiance's school, and the other had a nervous breakdown and left school for a while.

So I had to "start over" junior year, and it felt REALLY lonely at first. But I threw myself into activities, made new friends, and it all worked out by halfway through junior year.

I would so highly reccommend the experience. Learned a lot of great organization, social, and leadership skills. I interview people for a living, and I'm SURE that rush helped me learn a lot of useful techniques!!!!!

I think being in a large sorority system at a school in the NE was positive- not such a rigid social order, and more diversity of backgrounds (at the time) - Jewish, Catholic, Protestant, Italian, Polish, Irish, middle class & working class (I think it's become much more Middle/Upper Middle Class now). We were even physically diverse - tall, short, thin, pudgy, curly hair straight hair - I see pictures of my chapter now, and everyone looks thin, has straight hair, and looks WASPY (maybe it's all the straight hair!)
