Not sure where this goes

Hello everyone, I am not sure if this goes here or not but I am going to be a freshmen this fall 2006 at the University of Kansas. My mom and sister are both in sororities and they are really pressuring me to rush there. They keep telling me to keep my options open and chose what is right for me. However I don't know if i am "sorority material" so to speak. I am smart and have good grades but my ACT and SAT scores were both low. I wouldn't consider myself to be ugly but I don't think I am drop dead gorgeous and I tend to be a little shy at first. I guess I am just looking for some opinions on what to do based on what you girls as memebers would think about a girl like me coming into recruitment. Again, sorry if this doesn't go on this paticular topic.

Hey there! I've never gone through an NPC rush (I've gone through a local rush..), but I'll give you my 2 cents for what it is worth from what I have learned just from reading posts here and through friends that have gone through NPC rush. One thing you may want to do is put that you are a Delta Gamma legacy on your rush forms. It is your choice to do this (I think). You don't have to put those on there if you don't want too. From what I know about NPC rushes, they look more at your GPA then your ACT or SAT scores. (Someone please correct me if I am wrong!) Make sure you have an elgible GPA to rush. Most greek life homepages tell you what GPA the university/college requires. The only way to find out if you are sorority material is to try! Being "drop dead gorgeous" is not a prereq. for any GLO. Women in any GLO are women of any shape, size, and color! Of course keep your options open and keep a positive attitude! You may be surprised by the results. Good luck on whatever you decide!

Just remember that you are not obligated to join a chapter even if you do go thru recruitment. It is a good way to see if you do like what you see. Plus it's a great way to meet a bunch of new people. ACT and SAT scored don't matter. GPA and personality, and personal apperance is important. You don't have to be 'drop dead' geourous to be part of a sorority. You can put that you are DG legacy if you would like to.

Many women are not stereotypical sorority material, and yet, they are in sororities and love it! I'm one of them.

I say go through rush just to try it out. No harm in trying.

I would really try to work on your self-confidence over the summer. U of Kansas rush is pretty competitive, I believe. There are some fantastic chapters. But just from your post, you don't come across as having very good self-esteem, and that will show through during recruitment. Learn to like yourself and know what makes you special!

ditto to all the great advice the other ladies have shared with you. some people are not standardized test takers-that is a fact! and the only thing that means is that you are not a standardized test taker!! they should be looking at the grades you earned in your everyday school life. as long as you have a gpa that will qualify you for membership, you should not concern yourself with grades. fyi: the panhellenic gpa requirement may be lower than each sororities actual gpa requirement.

YOU need to decide if you want to rush. if your heart is not in it,that will probsbly show in your interaction with the sorority members. if you do decide to rush you need to get recommendations to all the sororities on yor campus.

ask your mom and sister to write letters of recommendation for you that let the dg's know that you are a legacy. have your mom and sister ask friends in other sororities to write recs. for you. you can ask your former teachers, friends of your parents, friends of the family, members of your church, co-workers, etc,

ask your mom and sister for rush advice. check out the panhellenic webiste at your school for tips on that rush.check out the sororities national websites and the local websites. read the rush threads on greekchat-there is some super advice in those, from ladies who have been there and done that!

there is no guarantee for membership, even for the most"perfect" pnm. just make an effort to smile, be friendly, cheerfully participate in conversations and show an interest in your rusher and her group, look clean and well put together and you have maximized your chances. best wishes!!

You high school GPA is what counts. You got into the university so your SAT/ACT scores are quite good enough.

You need to work on your attitude over the summer - you probably would make a great sorority sister in the right chapter. Yes, it's nice that your mom and sister are DGs, but honestly, the choice is up to you. The best advice I've given (and been told so) is this:

Don't look for a chapter you want to be like, look for the chapter that's already like you.

also rush is a good way to meet new people. Even if you do not join a sorority, you will gain something by meeting other women at recrutiment. I have quite a few friends that made really great friends threw recruitment.

When I went through recruitment I had no idea what to expect. I had great grades, wasn't ugly but was an introvert (and I still am) when it came to groups. I fail miserably in large groups where I don't know anyone, so you can imagine that I hate rush. I didn't fit into most of the groups on my campus but I did find one for me and 19 years later I'm a very involved alumna.

So anything is possible.

Definitely get recs and keep your mind open to all of the possibilities as you go through. Kansas is competitive.

I never thought of myself as "sorority material." I actually never had plans to go through recruitment in the first place, but when a new chapter came to my campus, I thought that it was a good opportunity to meet other women and serve my community (without the stigmas that I THOUGHT the existing groups held - which I later found out was pure silly). I jumped at DG because they were new to campus, but also because my mom was a DG.

I like the advice that many have given and will once again remind you that going through recruitment does not mean you have to actually join.

It seems to me like the parts of your personality that you view as not sorority like would be greatly helped by joining a sorority. I really wanted to get over my shyness and meet more women, etc. Joining a sorority was the perfect way to do this. Now I don't know what I'd do without my sisters!

Even after joining a sorority, I still seemed "non-sorority like" for the most part and it was always kinda a joke between many of my fraternity guy friends, they always called me the "non-sorority sorority girl." I didn't (and don't) drink, party, etc. I'm a geek (big into computers), who was always in bed early, and up early to work out. BUT that all being said, there was a place for me in my chapter and no one ever made me feel like I wasn't a part of things.

I'd say throw your name in the hat and rush, you are not obligated to join and it might end up being good for you (build confidence and help you overcome some shyness). I'd be nice to join Delta Gamma, but follow your heart and look at each of the chapters, a different one may really feel like you'd fit in...go with that, your mom and sister will be fine with it.

I am also going to be a freshman in the Fall of 2006. I will be at the University of Florida and will go through recruitment. I am nervous that I only have a few hours to decide which house I am best for and which house is best for me. As of right now I am finding rec letters for the sixteen sororities that UF has (atleast the sixteen listed on their website.) I am wondering how others felt about the time period in which you had to select a house for you. Also, I am stressing because recruitment is during the first week of school. I am concerned that I will have a class during the parties...what happens if I missed them? If anyone has been in this situation, I would appreciate some advice.
Thank you so much!

UF is doing recruitment during school this year? How odd.

Only two of the days overlap with school (the last Thurs and Fri) and the parties are at night so most likely you will not have class. If you do, I'm sure they will make arrangements for you - but honestly, I would just skip the class. It's drop/add week so they can't require you to go, because what about the people who add the class that next Monday or Tuesday? You're probably not going to miss much besides introductions and the syllabus, and you can easily make that up.

Good luck!

Not much happens the first week of class so if you know someone in that class, you can get whatever you missed. If you have class during a party, you can get an excuse, although I do not know if that applies at UF; you may miss that sorority but you are not disqualified from rush.

oops! I forgot the "not" and that's what I meant, sorry for the confusion if there was any!

Don't worry about that too much, something can always be worked out Good luck!
