Knicks' Antonio Davis Climbs into Stands
I heard about this on today's broadcast of STeve Harvey show.
ARTICLE HERE
Article excerpt
Davis later explained why he climbed into the seats during a timeout in overtime.
"I witnessed my wife being threatened by a man that I learned later to be intoxicated," Davis said in a statement issued after the game. "I saw him touch her, and I know I should not have acted the way I did, but I would have felt terrible if I didn't react. There was no time to call security. It happened too quickly."
Davis ascended about 10 rows of seats to reach his wife. There was no physical confrontation after he got there, but several people were pointing and shouting for a few moments before security arrived.
Davis, president of the NBA players' association, returned to the bench and took his seat before being ejected with 1:04 left.
United Center security remained in the stands for a few minutes more, where other fans appeared to be explaining what they had seen. Guards in suits and yellow jackets then escorted a group of people from the area.
Knicks coach Larry Brown said Davis went into the stands because he saw his wife "falling back."
Brown was coaching the Pistons during the November 2004 brawl in Detroit. A black eye for the NBA, the fight led to criminal charges and lengthy suspensions for Ron Artest, Jermaine O'Neal and Stephen Jackson.
But Brown was adamant that this situation should be viewed differently.
"Come on, that's his wife," Brown said. "That's entirely different. I was worried about Kendra. That's why he went in the stands, he saw her falling back.
"That thing that happened in the stands had nothing to do with the two teams. That's a man concerned about his family."
No arrests had been made as of late Wednesday night, police said.
Gordon hit his winning shot after New York's Jamal Crawford tied it at 104 with a 3-pointer with 4.6 seconds left. After a timeout, Gordon caught the inbounds pass near the top of the key and hit a jumper over Trevor Ariza.
New York's Maurice Taylor and Chicago's Chris Duhon also were ejected after a scuffle in overtime, a few minutes before Davis went into the stands.
"He took care of family first," Taylor said. "He's got his wife and young kids up there."
Asked about Davis' demeanor in the locker room after the game, Taylor said: "He was upset, but he was clear headed. Everyone watches where their family is."
Steve Kerr Thinks Davis Was Wrong
I wish GC had real polls.

I vote A also. Fans are getting out of control. They see what can happen if they attack the players, so now they are going after their family in the stands thinking they can get away with this type of harrassment.
People better be careful with who they mess with. I read this about two weeks ago in the washington post.
In Philly, Mama Said Knock You Out
Clinton Portis took a beating in Sunday's victory over Philadelphia. Apparently, his mother dished one out.
In the fourth quarter, Portis's mother, Rhonnel Hearn, was sitting in the end zone at Lincoln Financial Field with Portis's stepfather and some friends when an Eagles fan apparently tossed a beer on the group. Portis's mother responded by punching the woman in the face, Portis said.

I agree with your vote. I applaud him for watching out for his wife and family, and if it costs him a few games, then so be it.

I say slap on the wrist. I certainly understand why he did what he did, and I agree with it, but the league has to say that it is not ok. Folks don't know where the line is, where Antonio went into the stands because he thought he saw his wife fall, another person would go in because someone was flirting with his wife. I do think the fine should be relatively small though. Maybe like $1K. That chump change to these guys.

The NBA shouldn't punish him, and they should require teams to step up their security. If they don't want players going into the stands to protect their families, then they need to do a better job of protecting them, and all fans.

My vote is option A as well. He did what any REAL MAN would have done and that is checking on the well being of his family. Although I know they my punish him, I don't think he should be suspended and fined.

Slap on wrist. In view of Ron Artest, I just don't see David Stern letting Davis off the hook. I admit that I was nervous when I read the headline on MSN and was hoping, of course, that it wasn't one of my four favorite players.

A. I saw the videotape of this. He was just trying to protect his wife since there was no time to call security. I have nothing but respect for what he did and hope he isn't punished. I agree that they need to improve security for the families of players.

Exactly. Had he not done anything, he would have been called a punk, wuss, chump, etc. Fans need to learn how to check some of that attitude and jackassery at the door.
