Discrimination in Events for White GLO's

There was a post on non-black members in BGLO's. My question is why do the white GLO's not have a problem with blacks and whites intergrating into each other's fraternities and sororities. But when it comes to intergrating with there events there is a huge problem. Speaking for my school I have heard from numerous of friends, boys and girls, that they were not allowed in the white GLO parties because they were "too" black so to speak. Can any of the white GLO's answer that one or have opinions on it.

This is difficult question to answer, as this situation would vary immensely from campus to campus and region to region.

My local wondered the same thing. In fact, we were created in Spring 2000 with diversity as a key value. From day one, we have been looking for creative ways to socialize with all kinds of student groups: GLO's, BGLO's, cultural groups, and service groups.

We are now in the process of trying to affiliate with a national multicultural GLO. I personally think it's sad that there's a NEED for multicultural org's, since my group is representative of what I thought most "W"GLO's should/would be like...

We have our own set of challenges though: I've been to several cultural events and organized race relations discussions. I'm almost diversitied out! And in spite of the fact that some of our sisters are Caucasian and everyone gets along very well, some members of our group seem to think that white Americans are boring/cultureless/anti-minority, and have lost sight of the fact that EVERYONE is part of diversity. It's like we try so much harder to mingle with minorities...

This is definitely a complex issue. But it seems to me that a lot of individuals LIKE to separate themselves from others by forming exclusive cliques? Even when those cliques are based on something as generic and broad as race. It's hard for people to step outside of their comfort zone, which is unfortunate, since that's where stereotypes begin to break down, and real-world education begins...

Let me get this straight, you're asking us why 'white' GLO's are hypocrits in the sense that we ask for diversity, yet discriminate based on whether or not someone is too black or not? This is how I understood your question, so please correct me if I'm wrong.

My answer to the above question. I've never heard anything more rediculous in my life. I've never heard of a sorority/fraternity doing any such thing. How can anyone be too black in the first place? Being a member of a 'white' GLO, as you put it, my sorority did pride itself on diversity--not just skin color, but background, majors, religion, etc. However, we never excluded anyone because they were 'too' much of anything. That would be discrimination no matter how you put it. Maybe my school was an exception, I don't know, but I have never encountered this at all. Our school was very small and very tightly knit. A lot of parties were open to the whole campus, not just to greeks, so we had parties that were open to people from all walks of life.
