Should I pledge

Hi I'm a senior in high school. I am condsidering joining a sorority. I wanted to get some feedback of which sorority I should join. If I shouldn't join or what. I have heard a lot of different things: If you don't party all the time don't join a sorority. It costs way to much money. You have to be a snob to be in one. Please write back so I can get an idea of what to do. Thanks

Sorority life is what you make of it...there are chapters that party, that are nothing but study-nerds, etc. There is something for everyone - don't let rumor and stereotype keep you from Rushing. Even if you Rush, you don't have to join. If you decide not to join, then be sure to drop out of Rush before the end. It is inconsiderate to accept a bid to a sorority when you know you cannot become a member.

Cost of sorority life varies from campus to campus - is there housing? do you have to eat your meals at the house? Don't forget that very often living in a sorority house is less expensive, cleaner and safer than dorm housing.

Your first step should be to contact the Greek Life office of the campus you are attending. Have them send you Rush information and then use the Internet to visit the national websites of each sorority on your chosen campus. When you go through Rush, compare the individual chapters to their national goals and ask yourself "do these women live up to their goals?". If your answer is yes and you like the group, let them know through conversation, etc. If they know you like them, they'll invite you back. Most importantly, be yourself during Rush. Don't put on airs or act like you 'party' more than you really do. There can be a home for everyone in a sorority - no one group is better than the others.

I would encourage you to go through rush, to familiarize yourself with the greek system, meet sorority woman, and make an informed choice about greek life. The cost can vary, but at some schools it is about the same as living in the dorms.

Obviously, not all girls in sororities are snobs. You will find that some of them are genuine, down-to-earth girls, who strike a balance between social life and academics. The important thing is to find a house where you are comfortable. Remember, you don't have to accept a bid, if you deceide that sororities aren't for you.

At this point in your life, Dawn, you need to be concentrating on graduating from High School. Have you even been accepted into a college/university yet let alone a sorority? Come on now, let sororities take care of themselves until you get to college. Don't be worried about that yet. You have lots of time to think about that.

What everyone has said is true each sorority differs dramadiclly according to the school and it's members. Even if you decide not to pledge rush is a good experience to meet new people and let them get to know you. Good Luck.

Do your research first. Try going to some of the sororities events that are sponsored in the community and at the school before you join. Speak with some of the members of the sororities. If you attend church that's a good place to find members of different sororities. Also your teachers or professors can give you insite.

As many of the other posts of suggested already, formal rush is a must. Look at your options and pick the sorority which suits you best. A big mistake that many greeks make is jumping headfirst into the biggest baddest greek group on campus. I highly encourage you to take your time and find a group of sisters that you relate to. As we say in our chapter of Tau Kappa Epsilon, it's not the letters on your shirt that make you a Teke, it's the person wearing them.
