Ever resigned after only a month?

Here's the situation...

I took a job with a company in January. It wasn't really what I wanted, but I needed a job and they were offering. Yesterday, I was offered a job that pays about 15,000 more than the one I have now. I accepted because I couldn't turn down the money, the environment, or the benefits.

Problem, I have only been working for the company I am with now for a month and a half, and it is a SMALL company. There are 4 people including me. The man who owns it, his daughter, and a guy that his daughter has known forever (think Highschool).

So now that I have accepted the other offer how do I resign without hurting anyone's feelings (if possible). I want to give them 2 weeks, but I'm afraid of what the atmosphere will be like. Also, do I tell them first thing or wait until the end of the day?

Just tell them you couldn't turn down the money, environment, or
benefits. It's nothing personal and they should realize that.

As to when to tell them...it depends on the flow of the workday. Tell them at the least busy time. You can give them 2 weeks notice, but they might tell you to leave that day.

I'd give them two weeks' notice. That's the professional thing to do. You don't have to tell them the pay is better. You don't have to give a specific reason at all, but you should say something. If they do tell you to leave that day, you may be able to move up your start date with the other company.

It sounds like you already have an offer letter in hand from the other company, but if you don't, get one.

yeh thats tricky. if it were a huge conglomeration (ha) it would be easy to leave, no one would hardly notice (or if they did, care) cuz they are sooo impersonal.

i'd just tell them what you posted... good money... good enviroment... ability to climb the ladder.

hopefully, being a small personable business, they will understand.

It sounds like the company you got hired into is almost like family.

Which is probably why you ae having a problem. You are not a normal hire when basically its a family business.

But that goes both ways. I would go to the Dad and say, I have a problem someone just offered me another Job for 15 thousand more a year etc etc . .

I think the "dad" will probably be happy for you, maybe he'll offer you 20k more lol . . and then you can work out the details.

I agree with James. I was in a similar situation a few years ago at my old job. I worked for my dad's friend from elementary school and worked with my stepmom. I just went in and told him that I had been offered a job that I'd wanted for a really long time and I couldn't pass on the trial experience I'd receive at the new job. I stayed the two weeks, and it was hard b/c I had to tolerate sarcastic remarks but I still see him all the time and we socialize normally now.
