Back in the day, before we had deferred rush, freshmen went to a big kickoff event with a speaker etc. From there, men went off to fraternities while women went to a women's convocation where they learned about their sorority and independent living group options. [ETA: The freshman class picture was taken at the beginning of the kickoff event, so almost all the frosh showed up.]
For the first 3 or 4 days of rush, literally the only thing to do on campus was rush, which I think got some people to come out who otherwise might not have.
I think they still have a kickoff, but it's a more low-key event.
