cuts before recruitment starts???

Do sororities cut PNM's based solely on their application and resumes.. if they aren't impressed? I heard they put the PNM's on lists.. and that's what they go on. It's my first time rushing.. and I don't have such an impressive high school background. 3.17 GPA, attended 3 high schools (my parents were going through a divorce) , number one varsity singles tennis since freshmen year at every high school I've attended.. and a member of one high school organization.. not to impressive compared to some of the girls rushing..P.S. I'm not a legacy nor do I have recs. I heard this is not a good sign.

the only reason we DO cut girls before recruitment, is if we have prior knowledge of any "conduct unbecoming of a soror" ...meaning we do not think she will represent or mesh with the sisterhood well.

don't quote me b/c i know that my greek system is not your atypical system....

My chapter only cuts women that are also unbecoming, like if they've done something really awful...not the "Suzy sorority stole my lunch money in the second grade"

This all depends on the school you're rushing at. It's never SOLELY on your app. You'll meet lots of girls during the first round of rush, and their impression of you will have alot to do with whether you get cut.

Also, I see your location says Norman, if you're rushing @ one of the large Big 12 schools in that area, it might be beneficial to at least get a few recs just to introduce yourself.

Most schools will not make any sort of cuts to the list of PNMs going through recruitment until after the first rounds and even then each individual chapter will have its own criteria for making cuts. Many chapters do have grade requirements but for the most part, it's whether you have good conversations with girls while going through recruitment.

Recs would be very beneficial. Get in touch with your local Panhellenic, they should be able to assist you with obtaining recs.

I hate to make a post that has anything less than the most positive things to say. However, I must also point out that in my experience, some chapters are required to go ahead and release some PNMs after an "Open House" round in which only 10 members meet PNMs for 10 minutes. As an advisor, we ran into this last year. To use nice round numbers, lets say we were told to release 30 women after Open House (prior to Philanthropy Night where the whole chapter recruits in a 30 minute party). There were only 25 PNMs who did not meet our GPA requirement, and we were forced to find 5 more to release. Having not yet met them in a formal round, the only way we could do this was based on their applications. This was very tough to do, and rumor has it that we will be implementing newer, tougher release figures in the next couple of years that will require releasing more women, earlier in the game.

This will make recommendations play an even more important role.

Blair, I would follow the advice of Jocelyn, ISUKappa, and exlurker and get some recommendations. Additionally, get yourself a resume put together and submit that with your application. Even though you might not have been Johnny-Joiner when it came to high school activities, I'm sure you can think of other things that you have done to include on your application and your resume. Employment, Community activities, Fundraisers you may have participated in, Church/Religious activities, hobbies, special interests. In no way should you make ANYTHING up. But reconsider your past few years, I'm sure you will recall things you may have earlier dismissed. I'm really good at this stuff if you need help - just PM me and I'll pull it out of you!

Thank you guys for all your helpful advice. Most of my high school was consumed of tennis, I even played tennis associated with USTA, so sometimes we had a deal with my school where i would leave school early for tournaments and workout sessions, so I never had time to join clubs, I didn't even get a job until I graduated hs and I quit tennis. I'm open for any advice yall have, thanks!

Anyhow I will be going to the University of Oklahoma this fall. Their recruitment starts August 12th-17th. I open for any more advice yall have! Thanks!!
In your resume you can list some of the tennis tournaments you've won.

Also, I would be prepared for active sisters to ask you about tennis and why you quit the sport.

Your school has an AWESOME website for Greek life. They have pics of the individual sororites + links to the chapter websites. It's incredible.
The 11 NPC sororities are:

Alpha Chi Omega
Alpha Gamma Delta
Alpha Omicron Pi
Chi Omega
Delta Delta Delta
Delta Gamma
Gamma Phi Beta
Kalpha Alpha Theta
Kappa Kappa Gamma
Phi Mu
Pi Beta Phi

Look up the website if you already haven't & be prepared to fall out of your seat & have your jaw drop at the sight of those gorgeous homes. Also, the site is extremely detailed with information for PNM's as well as what you'll need & financial information. GOOD-LUCK! Let us know how it turns out for you.

P.S. I wish there was a Sigma Kappa chapter there. *sigh*

The only reason my chapter cuts PNMs before recruitment begins is if a PNM does not meet grade requirements (though there are exceptions) and a known problem that several GC members have listed.
