Chunky Cheerleaders
I know I'm in Canada now.. I was watching a replay of the Grey Cup parade on CBC today, and the Montreal Alouettes actually had a plus-sized cheerleader!
She wasn't huge or anything, probably no bigger than a size 12 or 14, but it was kind of amazing to see. I've never seen a big cheerleader for professional sports teams in the US.
It kind of made me feel good as a "chunky girl".

That's because professional squads are usually overglorified beauty queens. I've seen a lot of heavier girls on high school squads and at camp - hell, I was one.

Hey, I say, if you have the talent and can do the moves the other women are required to do and look good shakin' your moneymaker, go for it!

my high school had one. She usually was bad, but every year they took one chunkier girl just to say "hey not ALL of us having eating disorders)
but then again my high school had a really bad cheer team any way. They used to go to those summer camps, but they were to bad (never won anything) and had horrible attitudes the camps stopped inviting them.

I've never seen a "chunky cheerleader," not even at the high school level. That's great to hear that her talent/skills were not overlooked because of her weight.

One of my co-workers mentioned this last week... she was a cheerleader at her high school and she was saying her coaches were really strict... they'd do weigh-ins and you had to be under a certain weight.

My old coaches could never get away with this.
I was at least 30 pounds lighter when I was a cheerleader in HS, but there were at least 2 girls on my squad who were about 50-60 pounds heavier than me.
They ran as many laps as we did, went through conditioning, had perfect jumps, were fabulous at gymnastics....IMO, they were just as deserving for a spot on the squad just like the rest of us. It used to piss me off how people would snicker at the sight of them, but they were classy about it...and their hard work was noticed by everyone!

Oh goodness, did any of you have to do the fat pinch things in Jr. High?
I remember during physical fitness stuff, they'd to a fat pinch on our arms to see what our percent of body fat was. What's worse is they would do it in front of EVERYONE and announce loudly what your fat was. It used to horrify me.
Thank goodness they don't do that anymore, as my little sister now attends the same Jr. High.

We had a very chunky cheerleader in HS who was also NOT skilled at shaking her money maker. Oh, did I mention her dad was one of the phys ed coaches??

YUP. And every semester you had to be weighed, and same thing... your weight was called out to the student who was recording, who always seemed to be waaaaay across the room, making the teacher have to yell it out.
I count myself lucky that I wasn't the recipient of any of the ensuing giggling, but I do feel bad now that I perhaps was guilty of doing it. So to all of the self-conscious girls in my 7th and 8th grade gym... I'm sorry!! I was 13 and stupid!
