Is it really true?
OK I watched the remake of The Texas Chainsaw Movie and I have read where this movie is actually a true story. Has anyone else read that or seen the movie? If so, is this movie a real incident?
I mean this may be stupid to aske but I was just wondering what others thought.

It's true, however it is very loosely based on the real story. (I would personally use "inspired by" rather than "based on." I can't really remember the details of the murders, but it's the same set of murders that inspired Psycho.

the only part of Ed Gein's history that inspired the movie was that Gein used human skin/bones to make furniture, masks, bowls etc. Also hung up a woman he killed on a meat hook to flay her (after she was dead). The book Deviant is about him.
Check this out with TCM info - http://www.houseofhorrors.com/gein.htm

Yup, despite there being today (in the town where the flick was made) plenty of people who will swear blind to having known the family, spent time with the perp in prison, yadda yadda ; the TCM story isn't true at all. As ariesrising said though it was probably inspired very loosely on some level by the real-life serial killer Ed Gein.
P.S. It wasn't a stupid question.

It's a true story based on some guy in Piedmont, South Carolina. I understand his daughter took an incredible number of bowls, masks and furniture with her when she went away to college in Rock Hill.
Spooky.

Thanks ya'll. These are very interesting posts because there are lots of people who think it's true and those who weren't sure. I personally found it a little unbelievable that anyone would actually chase after people with a chainsaw. Who knows though, right? There are quite a few crazies and wackos out there.
