hotel room instead of dorm room?

I was just wondering if anyone has ever been in a situation where they ended up in a hotel room instead of a dorm room for a semester or a year. I'll be in a hotel room for the fall semester, and I don't know whether to be excited about it, or not....??

Well I haven't personally been in that situation, but I know several that was an issue 2 last year (or the year before I can't remeber) at the University of Guelph. They had just built new student townhouses on campus and many of them were not ready for students to move into.
The university put some of them up in local hotels until their townhouses were ready.

I've never had it happen personally, but if the hotel maid service was included, I think it would rock!! I love hotels.

UH dorm scramble extends to WAIKIKI

Housing was never a problem when I lived in the dorms, but apparently it's a big problem now because there are more dormers than on-campus spaces. To remedy the situation, the University of Hawaii Housing Staff made a deal with the Aston Hotels and secured dozens of hotel floors just so these students have a place to stay.

Imagine being a freshman or sophomore from the mainland...and receiving your dorm assignment -- Aston Waikiki Reef Tower Room 2410, and you have a view that overlooks Waikiki Beach and two nighclubs are downstairs.

Oh, the temptation! I know parents who drop off their kids before school starts get a kick outta that stuff!

Though Waikiki is 15 minutes from campus, the best way is to catch the bus as there's a route that goes straight from Waikiki to Manoa. Driving and parking is a nightmare and is expensive, and I don't think a lot of students from out of town realize that.

So...instead of having roaches and ants greet you hello -- they get housekeeping and room service.

We had this happen at WSU last year, and again this year. The dorms each have a 60 person waiting list, RA's have roomates, and people are living in the basements of the dorms. Last year they filled the Union building hotel with students, but when there were openings in the dorms, the kids didn't want to move out. This year, they housed people in the downtown hotels instead. And BTW, this all happened by only housing freshmen, no one else. Talk about overcrowding!

Last year they overbooked our dorms by oh about 350-400 people so a bunch of students had to stay in the comfort inn about a mile away from campus. There were some ups and downs. The big advantage was that you had your own ac/ bathroom, HBO and a free phone. The downside was that you had to walk a mile to class or the dining hall.

I know some kids that had this happen to them at the University of Minnesota. They said that there were a lot of great things about it -- maid service, access to the hotel pool, their own bathrooms. The two complaints that they had were that it took longer to get to class (the hotel was farther away than the dorms) and that it kind of disrupted their getting to know people, since, by the time they moved into the dorms, everybody had already made friends and they felt a little left out.

My University actually purchased a hotel/motel building near campus and rented out the rooms as dorms. My freshman year roommate moved into these during her sophomore year and loved the fact that she had a private bathroom, maid service and access to a spa!!

They usually put our kids up in the nearest hotel, which happens to be all of 5 stars.

Fucking bitches. Actually, thats where we go for drinks. Anyway, I wouldda killed for that problem. Yeah, I would prolly bitched at the time, but COME ON, its 5 STARS. I wouldda gotten over it.

What hotel is that..holy shit...
my alma mater is damn cheap, last yr. there was a waiting list equal to the capacity of all of residence. The only accomodating those kids got was the telephone 'on hold' music before being told that it's your problem, t.s.

Yeah, Guelph would normally do this too (take my $300 when I request a room, and don't give it back when I find some place else...the cheap b******s!)

Anyhoo, Guelph put the students in hotel rooms that had been guaranteed a spot in the new residence but they weren't complete. If you didn't have a spot because you sent in your res. app. late or it was full then it was your responsibility to find your own accomodation.

I should have gone to school in Hawaii with OTW or Texas with lifesaver. Those hotels are awesome! They stick you in a hotel with two rommates across a highway from campus and don't give you transportation. Yeah, that's how the students are treated in NY.

What with the low budget folks here in Alabama have we had an interesting situation my sophomore year. They closed one of the female dorms yet neglected to, uh, take in fewer people. How did they fix that you ask? By putting 3 people in a room that, in popular opinion, barely holds one person (can we say 7x12??) I had some friends that went thru that hell until they could sort of reorganize and reassign, which took a few weeks. The displaced persons got nothing in exchange, but the rooms that they put them in, each person got like $50. Still a sh*tty situation. Hence I only stayed one year on campus (in a brand new dorm!)

I've decided I've got a pretty sweet deal: Maid service twice a week, HBO and other cable channels that on campus students can't get, free access to the hotel gym and the YMCA across the street. Room comes equipped with 2 double beds, 2 desks, 2 chairs, 2 wardrobe spaces and 2 dressers. We have our own bathroom and refrigerator, but for a microwave we have to go to the "common room" down the hall. Each person gets 60mins of local calling per day, but long distance is the same as the residence halls. Rules of decorating are the same: nothing that leaves marks on the walls. Yup- officially decided that I've got it made.

Hey Matt- it could be worse. Those kids could be at the Capri Motel!!!
