my little rant

one day at work i am gonna blow up at every bad tipper and just lose it and get in big trouble!!! last night sucked with all the sh*t that was going on with the "blackout 2003" that was going on (power 2003 in our case...read my post if you want under the power thread)

if you are a bad tipper, then read this:
next time you go out to eat, i want you to think about how much you are tipping your server. i am sorry but 10% just doesnt cut it. i may sound greedy, but i am busting MY butt for YOU, making sure you have everything to make your meal enjoyable because i want you to enjoy your meal! contrary to some customer's opinions! please keep in mind that i do not control what the kitchen does, but if something comes out wrong, i will make every effort to fix it. yelling at me wont fix anything. if you dont have enough money to properly tip your server, please dont eat out. we have to tip out our bartender AND hosts so much money every shift. $2.13/hour + your 10% tip and then tip out???? you figure it out...

okay...i am sorry...i am done

***dances a big fat tip dance***

Tell it like it is, etahannah!

My younger brother works in the gaming industry in Vegas, although he is now in management he started off as a craps dealer thirteen years ago. Dealers earn pay at minimum wage and split tips with the dealers on the shift over a 24-hour period. (In the olden days of Vegas (way before my brother started working there), casinos split tips table for table over the shift.)

Depending on the business and the money dropped on the 'toke' box ('toke' is dealer-speak for tips, paid in chips or 'tokens') his toke envelope (paid in cash the following day) averaged around $55-$70. (All reportable to the Infernal Revenue Service; he had to keep good logs.) There were days like major holiday weekends, Super Bowl Sunday or a major prizefight where the toke envelope was well over $200, but those were few and far between.

Having lived in Vegas myself, I'm always making sure to tip generously, based on the quality of the service.

Question

What if the service is Bad??

Some service people act like they should get paid no matter what!

My thought is, if the food is so-so, and the service is good, OKAY they get a tip of good proportian, if the food is good and the service is Bad, Woe be them!

How do you all feel about tipping at buffets? I ask this because I just came back from one, and I only tipped 10%. I determined that this is a fair amount because all the wait staff did was bring me two sodas. I did all the serving myself.

Curious to know how you all tip at buffets. Sometimes I feel cheap about it, sometimes I don't.

I never grew up with a lot of money, but since my grandfather was a cab driver, I always tipped people generously. He is actually too ill to drive right now.

What irks me is when people I am dining with who are clearly well off are also cheap tippers.

ok...i guess my original point when i started this rant was that when i give excellant service and the food is good, then why is $2.00 on $31.00 appropiate (yes that was one of my actual tips from last night)?

that's what makes me

example:

i worked tues night from 3:45 - 9:00....my sales were $577.00 and i made $100 after tip out (i think i tipped out $10-$12)...very good night for what i worked

last night i worked from 5:15 - 1:30am and my sales were $810.00 and i made $110 after tip out (i tipped out $18 i think)...very very very bad...

now, if the service is bad and the food was so-so...i tip accordingly BUT always at least 15%. i think if i ever eat out at a buffet (rarely), we usually tip like a dollar per person or something like that..its been awhile since i hit up the local buffets!! lol

so...yeah...i dont know...just my $0.02 (wonders if that is 20% )

that makes me think of our tip jar at work. some people actually have the nerve to throw a penny in there. seriously, your penny will not be missed if you keep it.

I think at one point in time I had a "standard tip chart" from what i remember here's how it goes:
restaurant service 15-20%
buffet $1 per person (unless u serve your own drinks too)
salon-10%
barber-same
bellhop-around $5 unless you have lots of baggage
taxi-10%
housekeeping-$5 per night
pizza delivery-$2 per pizza
paper delivery-no tip, but small gifts on holidays

that's all I remember. I try to follow it as much as possible, unless service is just terrible! I've worked in various "service" industries since I was 16 and I feel the pain. I know what it's like...

When my parents divorced, my mom was a carhop for several years and always taught me to tip well. Last summer, our son was a waitperson at a chain restaurant (IHOP maybe).

I always tip at least 15%. Often closer to 20. When the gratuity is already added to the check, I always leave a few bucks more.

BUT...

Frankly, if it weren't for the family reasons stated above, I might not. To be blunt, service in most restaurants has gone from average to awful. Waiting tables is pretty much a lost art. (Present company excluded, I'm sure) Unless the waitperson is the only one serving ten full tables, I shouldn't have to ask twice for a glass of water or whatever. When I ask for a check, I'd like it sometime in my lifetime. I generally like food hot -- not tepid. And, if I politely tell a server that I have theatre tickets with the curtain in ten minutes, I really don't want to wait fifteen minutes for change or my credit card receipt.

And, would someone please write a new waitperson script? I'm real tired of, "Hi, I'm Chip and I'll be taking care of you tonight. Can I start you off with an appetizer or something from the bar? Are you ready to order, or do you need a few more minutes?" Be creative! Be real, not Memorex.

By the way, I always say "Thank you" when something is served to me or a request is fullfilled. The waitperson's answer should be "You're Welcome" or something like that -- not "No problem." Unless I've requested something outlandish, it shouldn't be a problem. It's part of the job! (Actually, that's true of any service industry job)

Having gotten all that off my chest, I know the salary (if any) is tiny, and I still tip on the high side (to the point that some of my expense reports were questioned in the past).

It is such a pleasure to get great service.

My only wish is that if someone really wants to make outstanding tips, he/she should be motivated to give outstanding service as well. I'm sure all of you do.

And that's the end of my rant.

oh my gosh...if i didnt have to give my dumb little speal i would be so happy...

at applebee's we HAVE to suggest a soft drink AND a specific bar drink...then we HAVE to suggest two specific appitizers...and then i ususally tell them my name...as in "and my name is noreen so if you need anything at all please let me know" and then at the end of dinner we have to suggest at the very least one dessert AND one after dinner drink....its a little riduculous and you cant skip any of it cause we have stupid secret shoppers...

i always carry a table's check with me...as soon as i put their order in, i print a check and write on it and carry it with me so if they want it at any given point, i can give it to them right then...

and ew...if you have to ask me for a refill, then i am not doing my job...i usually get you one before you can even think of asking me unless the customer is almost done, then i might ask.

mr. deltalum () i know you didnt mean me personally, but i felt like i need to give my two cents AGAIN....lol..sorry...

***dances a $0.02 dance***

Let's see. Two cents is twenty percent of a dime check. Right?

You're right. I wasn't pointing a finger at you, and I'm pleased you understand that.

Someday, though, I want to meet the PR/Advertising/Marketing person from each restaurant or chain that uses that broken record approach, put them in a room and play a tape of "the script" over and over again until they either change or go slowly out of their mind.

My little's a waitress... she told me a story that at her last job, she had gotten change as a tip (forget how much the bill was for, but she certainly deserved more than change)... and so she went up to the people and said, "You forgot some change on the table." They were like, "Oh no that's for you." She responded, "Here I don't want it." She later got in trouble for doing that.

Another friend is a waitress and a bunch of my friends and I went out to dinner... our waitress wasn't very attentive, but the friend who's a waitress was very adamant about leaving a nice tip while one of my friends was like, "No she was awful." They actually got into a little argument about it.

I'll tip well if the service warrants it. My dad on the other hand tips generously even if it's not good, which I disagree with.

I once tipped the girl who waxed my eyebrows at school $10... I think the waxing itself only cost $8... I didn't realize it til after I left the place... I don't know what I was thinking because she was like no it's too much... it was the first time I went to her and she did a really good job, so even though I was kicking myself for it, I was like well at least she did a really good job... I went to her regularly afterward.
