expansion- chartering without the IFC giving full-member status

This is something my campus is dealing with right now. There is a group that is up for a vote this week on their one year colony status. Now I will call this group XYZ for the sake of not upsetting anyone b/c it is their org.

Now, this colony has been found in violation of IFC policy and in our expansion policy it is stating that during the year probationary status if you are not in compliance with policies we cannot grant full-membership status to you. So the only 2 ways we can vote is either to keep them on another year as a colony on probation or to remove recognition. Well we have been told by our greek life advisor that their national headquarters is planning on chartering them no matter what the IFC does. Do you think this is fair?

On top of this the group has made open threats that if the vote is not in their favor that they will call the cops on everyone's social events. Do you think this group deserves a charter(why or why not)? and do you believe that a national headquarters should charter them even though the administration and IFC still hold them as a colony?

your input is greatly appreciated.

I think that everyone's nationals should stand behind their chapter as long as they are doing well and not breaking laws. Why let a colony die because IFC doesn't want them, that would be stupid on the nationals part.

The threat on calling the cops is pretty childish though. They might even benfit rush wise if they don't get into IFC because they won't have to follow the rules.

ZNTKE: just to clarify, they aren't a chapter they're a colony. Also we want to keep them as a colony and work with them, not kick them off.

on that alone, HELL no. jerks.

I'm starting to think that "XYZ" is a bunch of pod people from the sperm/egg of 2 certain former Greek advisors, given recombinant growth hormone and incubated in that dryer in Campbell that always burns your @#$%ing hand off when you remove your clothes.

zntke - it has nothing to do with not wanting them - they didn't follow policy that was laid out to them. That's the way the IFC constitution is set up. They must have thought they didn't have to follow rules, but they do.

Just curious what rules did they break? If the broken rules were bad I would think that GLO's nationals would side with IFC.

I knew it was a colony put chapter, my mistake. Plus I didn't know that more than likely they would be left as a colony. If they lost recognition by IFC, the nationals should stick by them anyway.

Thumbs up

zntke, very good point! What rules did they break?

The IFC is a body made up of fellow Greeks with a Facualty advisor. I think the Key is what are they not following vis a vis of the IFC!

If they are a strong National and feel that the Colony is doing well, they will and can Charter them.

Maybe there are problems with the members of the IFC? Why put another Fraternity on campus maybe?

I am a firm beleiver that the more Greeks there on Campus, Frat./Soro., then the stronger the school will be for Greeks! Just my thought though.

This is the same thing in a way that PHC talks about limiting new Soros on campus as they do not have Numbers!

I look at my School and wonder why, with a population of over 6700 that there are only 3 Soroitys there. I look at other schools that have twice the number of Fraternitys (6) and Soroitys (3) that we do.

Something is wrong with this picture when others have so many more and are doing very well.

The more Greeks on campus who get along the better the whole Greek Community will benefit!

Again, unless they did something horrendious, then they may not be so bad, an if their Nationals is not opposed to it, then why should the IFC be?

More info may be helpful.

PSK 480:

I would suggest that all of the chapters that are currently on IFC contact their national HQs and share this information. The other nationals might be able to put a little pressure on XYZ national to reign their colony in some. Is your advisor present during these meetings when they make these threats? If so, why the hell isn't he/she doing something about it?

ZNTKE, Tom: They were found to have multiple underground(ghost) pledges, in their second semester. They are being investigated for underage drinking at their house. Numerous fights at the bar which they instigated. They have had the police called to their house for noise ordinance violations, and they also broke borough ordinance pertaining to letters being displayed on a house.

Sheila: I think they may be the spawn of those 2, they whine alot when they don't get their way.

BSU: these threats were not made at a meeting, they were made to pledges and members of numerous organizations on our campus. Such as threats towards groups about parties, mixers, and houses. I'm pming you about the national part.
