A question

Our EC is determined by what IHQ says right? I mean if you thought a position should be on EC, you can't make it so because the rules for EC go far above a chapter right? I'm just wondering this because I went to a Greek Leadership Conference yesterday and found out that many of the fraternities and sororities representated there had their Alumni/ae Chair on their EC. I know as Alum Relations that I am on the President's Team, and that's really fine and all but I was wondering if anyone could give me a holler about how our EC is defined exactly. In my plegde handbook, it seems that IHQ dictates who is EC (not saying IHQ is a dictator or anything...that's just the first word that popped in my head). Anyway, the conference got me wondering about this...if it can happen, should Alum Relations be put on EC (no, I'm not on a power trip here...)?

P.S. Do we have any other Alum Relations Coordinators out there?

I do actually agree with you and that is really why I made this post. It seems like something worth speaking to my chapter president about, but since IHQ runs it all, it would be futile. Like I said, it's not that I'm on a power trip, it's simply that so many other GLO's have the Alum Chair on EC and it is an important position...who else really keeps the alums updated and stuff on chapter/camus events?

If you have a chapter house, you can't change your EC. The property coordinator is a mandatory EC officer for chapters with housing (I think that even goes for chapters that have a suite in a residence hall, but I'm not sure). You can't just tack on another office to EC in addition to the ones that you have, and you can't, for example, boot the VPCR and stick the alumnae coordiator in there. In chapters that don't have housing, the 8th member of EC is the "Coordinator-at-Large," which is whichever coordinator is important enough to the chapter to be on EC, and that can be changed through some sort of voting process and approval by IHQ. All-knowing sisters, correct me if I'm wrong, because I don't have my notebook with me here at work. If I remember, I'll go and look it up later and correct myself if necessary.

BTW, I'm the alumnae relations advisor for my chapter, so I definitely agree with you that AR is an important job!

The Collegiate Officer Elections Manual has a section that describes the Coordinator at Large position and how an officer may be selected for this position for those chapters without a house, suite, etc. The President and Chapter Advisor both have a copy of this manual by nature of their office.

Also, IHQ has nothing to do with the selection or approval of which officer can be appointed to this position on EC.

Hope this helps.
