Accents?

Okay after looking at all the regional difference threads on Chit Chat I am wondering about accents...

Well I have lived some of all over (but mostly in the South). However, my accent is NOT like any I know of. It is kinda New Yorkish with a little Spanish twang and some fastness from Miami with a LITTLE bit of southern comfort. LOL! Nobody can ever guess where I am from! I have no idea where I got it from, but I love the anonymity of it!

What about YOU??

I'm your typical New Yorker...so I have that typical New York accent.

Depends on who I'm talking to.

Most of the time, I think I speak standard english pretty much without an accent.

SOMETIMES I do a New York accent, like i'll say cawfee or something, but that's pretty rare, and usually like, one word.

With my peoples I sometimes have a black slang accent. Might through in a SPanish word every once in a while.

I have been knwon to do a semi-southern bit too, lol. And when upset it's straight Jamaican. Good accent for cussing somebody out.

Depends on my environment. I pick up accents really fast and my speech will change to adapt to what environment I'm in. Generally though, I have a lil bit of a southern accent and a smidge of NY, which I got from my husband.

You ain't never lied! LOL! I have heard some of the smoothest, rawest cursings-out in patois or half-patois/half-english!

As for me when I am angry, sometimes I let loose some Spanish. It just SOUNDS better sometimes. More poetic, lol.

Although I haven't lived in New York for sometime, you can still hear it. My boyfriend always says, " You can take the girl out of the Bronx.....

", we all know the rest. It's usually not as heavy when I am at work though. And when I am with the fam or straight pissed it's Jamaican all the way

For the most part, it's definitely the Brooklyn accent. However, most of my friends (especially from school) are from the West Indies and I have a tendency to pick up their accents.

A typical NY'er. My ex-friend from Philly used to always say that I had an accent, when he sounded just as country. Yuck!!! Maybe that comes from when he lived in Oklahoma when he was in the Army.....

my southern accent comes out more when I'm at home chillin or with other country soundin' folks. Depending on who I'm talking to and what I'm talking about determines how country I sound. There are also ALOT of phrases that I use which bring out my drawl!!!!

If I'm amongst my family, my accent from Havana,Florida will come out in a heart beat. I moved to Detroit at the age of 9, and my classmates use to tease me something awful about my accent. After living in Detroit, whenever I went back to Florida to visit family, they would say that now I talk "proper." I couldn't win for losing. It's also one of the reasons why my I chose English as my major in college.

Although I was born and raised in the South (Memphis, TN), most people from my area think I talk proper. But, whenever I talk to someone from up North, they point out my Southern accent.

I guess it all matters on what the people you are speaking with are used to hearing,

I got that Southern drawl, although I hate to admit it. Sometimes I'll catch myself saying something especially country-fied and be like, "Dayum!"

Same here for the most part (I'm from Charleston, SC).

At work, I'm in constant contact with people from all around the country. Having to work with these people via phone allows for a lot conversation. People will ask where I'm from and are really surprised when I tell them. It seems as though those from the Northeast are better at picking up my accent than people out west.

I never really thought I had an accent untill I moved to New Orleans. I still get the U Not From Around Here Speech!!I mean to me they are the ones with the accent....What is Yayyy and Noooo

Well SeriousAKA and AKAtude, I'm in the same pot with "y'all". I'm from Florence, S.C. (born, raised, and educated), but I now live here in Richmond. Now I'm ALWAYS being told that I have an accent (one which I seriously don't hear). Most people say that they LOVE to hear me talk because I SOUND like I come from the South. Now tell me if I'm wrong "y'all", but isn't VIRGINIA in the South also? I mean, for REAL.

But it doesn't matter, does it? Because "y'all" can believe that when I need to tighten up on my English (like during business conversations, presentations, or when having a conversation with someone about my MONEY or trying to prove a point to some so-called big-time INTELLECT), I roll with the BEST of them.

To be honest, I think accents are really neat. And, although I really don't hear my accent, I take it as a compliment when someone asks me to say something just so they can hear it.
