Transfer/Initiation
Hey, everyone! Some of you might have read some of my threads . . . I'm not going to repeat what I've said but I just wanted you all to know that tonight was supposed to be part of my initiation. Since I'm transferring schools, I had asked some of the sisters a while ago if it would be easy to affiliate with the chapter where I'm transferring to. They said I couldn't . . . finally, I found out today that I could have very easily. I COULD have been there tonight but I felt wrong initiating into a chapter where I haven't been there for the past 3 weeks because they told me my membership wouldn't transfer . . . I'm just kinda sad b/c I really wanted to be part of this org. Plus, the advisor who told me I could have affiliated with the other chapter told me that I wouldn't be able to accept a bid from any org until next semester. I thought my transfer would void my bid . . . I really want to be part of this org, though.

according to npc, transferring does void a bid. so the rule of not taking a bid from another npc group for a full calendar year would not apply to you.

I take it from your user name you are/were pledging Sigma Alpha Iota? They might have different rules than NPC does. The best bet is to contact your national office because it sounds like the sisters at your present chapter aren't sure of the procedure. Good Luck!!

SAI is not NPC. In fact I think it came up in another thread.. you can be an SAI and a member of an NPC org at the same time.

Just to further the NPC explanation...yes, on the heels of this, when you are extended a bid and you accept it, you are bound by the rules of that specific campus' Panhellenic. So, if you switch schools PRIOR to becoming an initiate, it's a different campus' Panhellenic, so your slate is "clean", you are a free agent to accept a bid to anywhere (provided that you are not already a full initiate of course).

just an fyi...she had been pledging an npc org.
sai-
i am sorry that you were given incorrect information! affiliating with another chapter is not a guarenteed thing, tho. i think that the chapter you were initiated into has to reccommend you. i do know that you would not be able to affiliate immediately, anyway. without going through the initiation, you will be able to have a fresh start at your new university. perhaps there will be a chapter of a different sorority that is a better fit for you. i know that you would have liked to remain a part of this org, but you don't know what you will find at your new school! i hope that things go well for you!!! will you be transferring in the spring? best of luck and keep us posted!!

It is a shame that things haven't worked out for you. Although there will always be sisters you don't get along with (tell the truth everyone!) there are ties that bind us all together in sisterhood and we understand and find much of it in our rituals.
As for changing shapters.....usually the initiating chapter has to okay you to affliate and then the other chapter does not necessarily have to accept you----you have to be invited by the new chapter. So....trying to initiate and then transfer doesn't always work out----but most of the time everyone is okay with the process.
I have always heard that if you accept any bid from a NPC group and then leave (or decline a formal bid) no matter where, you always had to wait a calendar year to accept a different group. If so, that's better than leaving after initiated and then never being able to accept anywhere else. You're fortuate that you want to join the same group elsewhere, just as long as they want to join.
I hope you find the place for you wherever it is.

Actually, and I hate to say this, your first chapter was right. When you transfer schools without being initiated your bid is basically "voided."
If you have been initiated before transferring, you are a member of XYZ, period. You may or may not become an active member of your new chapter - that depends on your GLO. If you don't become an active member, you would have alumna status.
It's not true that you _always_ have to wait a calendar year; that's only true if you remain on the same campus. From the NPC webpage: "If a potential member receives a bid under the preference system, she is ineligible to be pledged to any other NPC fraternity on the same campus for one calendar year. ... A woman who has had her pledge broken by an NPC fraternity, or who has broken her pledge to an NPC fraternity, may not be asked to join another NPC fraternity on that campus for one calendar year from the date she was originally pledged. However, she may be repledged by the same NPC fraternity chapter at any time within that calendar year. "
