A favor for a friend

A friend of mine (well, hopefully more than a friend soon ) wants to rush a sorority this fall. however, she is also heavily involved in athletics, working on the management team for the Girl's Basketball Team as well. She wants to rush AND do her athletic responsibilities as well. I've warned her that she probably can't have her cake and eat it too, but I am seeking a second opinion. Does anyone have any succes/horror stories about this kind of situation?

Honestly, I'd say it depends what school she's at. My new member experience was much different in the North than that of a girl I know who pledged at UTEP. Also, the campus pledging environment is important, because she can gauge how much time she will REALLY need to do it. You can email me the school...maybe then I'd be able to respond more clearly.

I know that there are girls at my school who play intercollegiate sports AND are in houses. A girl in my freshman dorm played soccer, pledged pi phi, and maintained good grades freshman year. She's still playing soccer, and I think she's an officer in her house. Actually, there's quite a few girls in Pi Phi in the soccer team, and I think there's a few volleyball players in sigma chi. And atleast one guy in PKA plays football for the local JC, so it definitely can be done! My advice for your friend would be to go for it, because if you really want something, you can work to make it possible (and good luck to you too! )

I think your friend can do both sorority and sports without a problem. One of my pledge sisters played tennis for our school, held an executive position in our chapter, and still managed to make a 4.0 every quarter. She was one of the most "together" girls I've ever known.

I agree with what's been so far...but not only does it depend on the chapter, but it also depends on how organized she is. For some of the sisters in my chapter, it's not a problem juggling the sorority, school, and athletics. Our most recent president was not only president, but also an All-WAC Scholar-Athlete in cross country. She was gone a lot during X-country season, but because she was so on it she made sure she took care of her responsibilities (chapter reports, agenda, etc) before leaving on road trips.

Is your friend heavily involved with the team now even though it's off-season? I know most women's teams don't start until late Fall/early winter.

By all means, encourage her to go through Recruitment! She's got nothing to lose if she wants to learn more about the sororities. She can find out from the sisters some of the activities they have planned for the coming semester..and after weighing her options she can decide if being a sorority will be right for her!

i think we all know, that most times that the doers will do no matter what on all accounts and the others dont, it is normally the 20 % who do and the rest ride along.
