maybe i'm being paranoid...

okay i just thought of something that hadn't crossed my mind before. at the schol im going to the have rush in the winter after winter break. thats right when i usually get my "winter cold" and can't talk for like 2 weeks... what happens if i lose my voice during rush? would i be totally screwed not being able to talk to anyone? this might sound a little paranoid but i seriously lose my voice every year!

why don't u start to hang out and become friends with some of the sisters in the houses your interested in and tell them the situation and ask what can be done and how they would feel if you showed up and no voice (this might work because they could get to know you before rush and you have all of fall semester). you could always really hit the honey and lemon, throat drops, the works to make yourself feel better. or go to the doctor before and have them recommend a really good medicine. trust me i know how you feel i have the same problem, except it usually happens in the fall for me go figure, but my voice around end of spet or mid october for a couple of days will sound horrible or I won't be able to talk at all.

umm. Rush is really important. buti t's nothing to loose sleep over. If you loose your voice contribute in other ways: help out, help set things up, or clean up etc. Make a good impression.
I guess that's all the advice anyone can give you other than to chill out a bit :-)~

Take a ton of Vitamin C and make sure you take care of yourself during that time. Get a flu shot, and try out herbal remedies like echinacea.

This happened to me!

Last fall when I was rushing, I woke up the morning of prefs and I could not talk at all. I took some kind of cough drops and by the time the parties started in the afternoon, I could talk but barely. I was really hoarse. I was really nervous but in the end everything worked out OK.

We had formal rush in January and February. During this time about a quarter of the rushees and sisters got sick. Don't feel bad if you do get sick because you won't be alone. A flu shot, vitamins, sleep, and soup should help prevent illness.

My 1600 post!!!

Re: maybe i'm being paranoid...

Make sure that you get sufficient sleep and rest! It sounds like you might be burning the candle at both ends, and that can really run you down and make you more susceptible to colds!

my therapist tells me that she takes echinacea, vitamin c & vitamin e anytime she starts to feel run down or prior to going on airplanes(bc you're breathing recycled air). echinacea is supposed to be an immune system booster.

She says she hasn't gotten a cold in 10 years or something like that. Also, she says women's ultramega is a great multivitamin to help your body out.

Good luck to you!

Meliss-Look at the BRIGHT side. It could be just the thing to make you stand out in their memory!
Honestly, I'm a March cold person...every year! What we do is take a contact at the FIRST sign. If you KNOW you always get sick, watch for the signals like a scratchy or dry throat and take something then, not later.

I agree with getting plenty of rest and taking herbs and vitamin C (Just be careful of drug interaction when you take herbs). Be sure you start well in advance, like 3 weeks prior to recruitment.

edited-Heck, you should be taking your vitamins anyway! Go out and get some. Also, the best defense is to wash your hands frequently and LIMIT the exchange of saliva!!!

LOL...don't worry meliss, you'll be fine. A friend of mine was so worried about rush last year because she had a really bad cold sore on her lip, and I swear, if anyone noticed, it never showed. She got into a great house without any problem, and so will you, sick or not.

meliss:

that happened to me last year. I had horrible strep throat for all of winter break and got better and then as soon as I got back to school i woke up with a horrible cold with like three days before rush... my roommate thought i was dying because i looked so miserable

i was so scared i would cough or sneeze on a girl during rush parties and she would think i was disgusting and cut me... but it wound up working out ok. I had a bit of a deeper voice than normal, but i still wound up in the perfect house for me...
