How we represent ourselves?
Ok, I have a question for you Alpha Gams out there. Speaking of how people look in certain clothing (pref party dress thread), how important do you think appearance is to representing our Chapter? I don't mean size, or hair color, I'm speaking of how one dresses. Like, if you're at a social, where you represent the chapter, what is considered appropriate? Do you think that this should be an issue? I ask because sometimes I notice how girls from different chapters dress at socials. How far can that lead into making others think your chapter is trashy because of how you dress? And for that matter... if people disagree often with a member's choice of attire... what would YOU do if YOU had the final say?

You should always dress and act as the best representative of Alpha Gamma Delta (or any other Greek org.) that you can be..whether you are at a social function or walking down the street alone.
One of the prevailing myths of Greek life is that when someone sees an AGD or any other Greek, they think that all Greeks are "that way"..positive, negative or indifferent.
As for the attire, it depends on the occasion and what is the prevailing "fashion" or what is "required". What works at one campus may seem "trashy" at another.
It doesn't do the individual, chapter, or the Fraternity any good if people get the wrong impression b/c of your attitude/dress.
Anyone who doesn't want to present the best image possible for AGD needs to have a "head and heart" check.

At my chapter our code of standards put somethings about clothing in writing.
Such as you cannot wear cut off shorts with letters, period! Khaki or black shorts are preferred to jean shorts with stitched letter shirts.
You cannot wear letters in a bar, or while drinking.
You cannot wear letters while smoking (wear a jacket overtop)
I have to say at formals and such we always had a ball, and everyone basically knew what everyone else was wearing beforehand. I never saw a sister show up looking trashy. I did see sisters end up quite intoxicated and they were taken home.
I have to say that when I pledged those rules were strictly enforced and of late they have been slacked on. I think the new EC plans on changing that, though. Thank god

I was chatting last month with one of the neatest Alpha Gams, she's in her 90s and is still in the center of the social whirl. We got on the subject of what it was like when she went through AGD in her college years. She was saying that International Reunion Day lasted all day and was quite the event of the semester, a far cry from our usual 2 hour lunch.
She said that her only regret was that they hadn't pledged two sisters who had the audacity at the time to wear cotton after Labor Day (you only wore silk or wool at this college). But appearances and how you represented the sorority were very stict then, quite a difference from the freedom of fashion we have today.
I think appearances are important. I started at the Univ. of N. Colorado and SAE was the top fraternity on campus, the men dressed very well (all the guys wanted to be one and all the girls wanted to date one). When I came back from exchange 3 years later (long story), the "grunge" look was in and they were pretty indistinguishable from all the other fraternities. My point is, appearances do matter when people have to pay fees to join a club. They want to see that their money was spent wisely (and for some people that money is hard to come by) on something that will set them apart from everyone else.

Amy

I feel any time you are in letters you are representing the fraternity and should dress accordingly, Now what that means I guess is however you taught.
I know at my chapter we were taught we could nt drink in letters. You could smoke but you had to be sitting down. However when I moved up north they didnt seem to have aproblem with drinking in letters.
I personally feel I am representing Alpha Gam everyday because people who know me know I am in AGD and then could judge AGD on my dress or behavior. But I dont blow this out of proportion either.
I probably didnt make any sense but I feel as long as you are presentable(not showing key body parts) and not grossly clashing its all pretty petty and you should just adapt and know everyone is different.

I agree with the posts that state that anytime you are in our greek letters you are representing the Fraternity as a whole. This includes wearing your letters as an alumna as well.
Also, I have to add in that by using our letters in our posts on this website is also representing our organization. I only bring this up because while searching threads I have noticed a few Alpha Gams posting posts that do not follow the standards of Alpha Gamma Delta or NPC. Please remember that this is a public forum and we are still representing the Fraternity and her members.
Thank you!
