Question Sorority/Fraternity houses

Big Sisters and Brothers- Do you stay in a sorority/fraternity house with the rest of your sisters/brothers? And do you stay in the house the whole year, even in the summer? How many ppl live in the house with you?
Just wondering- Lil sister

Hi Forito Baroulko,

I'm gonna move into my sorority house this fall. You can only live in the house during the regular school year, so during breaks and summer my house is closed.

This is my chapter's situation: 60 girls live in the house (sometimes fewer if a girl buys out two spots, like my big is doing), there are 15 rooms that have a common area with two bedrooms (each bedroom is for 2 girls) and a bathroom. Our house director (house mom) has her own apartment-like space downstairs (it's really cute, a true old lady's house...it's like you've stepped through a time portal). There's an exec bedroom that houses 4 girls downstairs (it's built to be handicap accessible, should we ever have a handicapped sister, so it's bigger than the other rooms and the president and three others get to have it), and the other 14 are upstairs.

You're required to live in the house if you are on the Exec board. There is a housing requirement that every room must be occupied. There's actually a little competition for who gets to live in the house because usually sophomores want to live in the house and the execs are already guaranteed spots. All members have to fill out applications, but usually only sophomores and juniors want to get in. Whether you get in or not is based on a points system, like how many sorority-related activities you've participated in, how many philanthropies you've done, how many extracurriculars, etc.

I'm really looking forward to moving in! If you have more housing questions, feel free to ask.

Over here we live in the house year round. We have thirteen bedrooms so the max of residents i believe is 23. I think that living in the house during the summer is the best time.

Our house holds 18 sisters, two singles and 8 doubles of variying size. We have a big chapter room in the basement, a living room, kitchen and two bathrooms, one with three stalls etc and one normal one...

we have to live in our house for one year nationally and we just added that you have to live there two years locally... (two years total)

Our house mom is a sister who lived in the house before, we dont have anyone else but actives live there.

At our house, we have nine single rooms, two doubles, and a presidential suite that has its own bathroom. The suite can hold up to three people if needed, so that max capacity of the house is around 20.

If we had more members that wanted to live in, we could go to a sleeping dorm arrangement in one of the basements that we call "siberia". Unfortunately, we haven't had those kind of numbers since the middle 1970s

Our house holds 49 sisters, plus a guest room that can sleep two if need be. there are 24 double rooms and one single, which is our presidents room. Some girls decide to get a single which means they buy out two spots, the singles all live on the first floor except for the pres who is on the second floor. Our house mom lives on the first floor in her own suite, its like a small apartment. In our house the exec board is required to live in the house too. The way girls get picked to live in the house is by seniority, and room selection is the same. most girls decide to stay in our same rooms which gives us priority over anyone in the house, its great.

Some sororities and fraternities are unhoused, too. If you join an unhoused sorority or fraternity, your room and board are handled the same way as any other student's.
