Need songs to wake kids up with.

Well I finally got started at my job as a counselor for the Future Astronaut Training Program (Space Camp ) at the Kansas Cosmosphere and Space Center in Hutchinson Kansas (www.cosmo.org).

Obviously like any counselor I, at times, will be waking campers up, and I found out that we can use music (which they didnt' use back when I was a camper). So I want to make a cd with a bunch of songs that I could play really loud to get people up with.

So far the songs that I know I want to put on include:

The Star Spangled Banner by Jimi Hendrix (prime for mission day)
Get out of my dreams, get into my car by Billy Ocean
A punk cover of A-Ha's Take on Me
Sandstorm Darude (it's that ONE techno song that everyone has heard...you'd know if you heard it)
Also probably a techno remix of the Verve's Bittersweet Symphony.

Basically I need several more ideas and the requirements are as follows:

1) Absolutely no swearing...the campers are 6th, 7th, and 8th graders so who knows what's acceptable from camper to camper...I certainly don't want to be the one responsible b/c little Johnny now knows the different forms of the F-word.
2) The more obscure is better. I'd rather not have them be able to sing along later on in the day for the 1000th time hence the number of instrumentals
3) Should be something that's able to be played loud and sound good
4)Should be fairly energetic...I want to get them up not chill them out and put them to sleep (thus none of my favorite Phish songs)

If you know anything that seems like a good idea let me know!

Annoy them awake with "Wake me up before you go-go" by Wham. They'll be so confused they'll just get their butts out of bed to go investigate what's going on.

You want something reallllly obscure???

Try "Guiding Star" on the Mother Nature Calls album by Cast.

Cast is a band from England. Mother Nature Calls is from 1997. The song is upbeat and the words go like this:

"Get up! Get up! Get up! Get up!!
Get up! Get up! Get up! Get up!!
Get up! Get up! Get up! Get up!!
Get up! Get up! Get up! Get up!!

Here comes my guiding star
To take me home
I've travelled lands afar
We blindly roam

We spread our wings
In search of truth
And all it brings
We got a glimpse of a forgotten dream
And we want it to pass to you.

....Get up! Get up! Get up! Get up!..."

It's positive, has no swear words, yells "Get up!" a billion times and sorta kinda has a space reference. So, if you want a nice challenge, try looking this song up.

Other suggestions include:

Shake, Rattle & Roll - by Joe Turner

Yakety Yak - by The Coasters

William Tell Overture ~ Finale - by Rossini (hey! no words!!)

I'm a Believer - by Smashmouth

When I was in HS, my youth group would take a retreat every year and to wake us up they'd play a recording of Robin Williams saying: "Good Morning Vietnam!" at full blast.

I was a councelor at a camp for high school students for a week last summer and they woke us up every morning with childrens songs. Usually something from animaniacs or veggie tales. The only problem is that the songs were pretty catchy and we ended up humming them all day.

Pardon my ignorance on this one, but I think it's by System of a Down, and it goes something like "Get up, come on get down with the sickness". Heavy metal, will definately wake them up. Or another good one is Beethoven's 5th. I know if I woke up to the beginning of that it'd scare teh crap outa me and I'd have to get up!

"Let the Day Begin" by the Call. Definitely good for psyching you up to go tramping over the hills of Ireland! (or, umm, the plains of Kansas)

There are also a lot of good get-moving tracks on Yaz's "Upstairs At Eric's" album.

You might want to be careful with the Billy Ocean though - that could start a camper revolt.

You know that Technotronic song from the early 90's called "Get Up!"? That's a good song.

The words are something like Get up Get up get busy do it Get up and move that body...or something like that. I remember it from the radio and from Dance.

Du Haste, or anything else by Rammstein. Something by Motorhead would work as well. It is deep, can be played loud for a booming sound (not harsh), and is all in German so the kids won't be singing along later. The down side is that it might give them nightmares.

You could also go classical. My mobile phone plays Wagner 'Flight of the Valkyrie'.

The Beatles, baby!

Try "Good Morning" by the Beatles. "Revolution" would also be a good choice. Or "Twist and Shout." Of course, they'll blow out their little vocal chords trying to imitate John Lennon, but they'll be awake. Lots of Beatles songs would get them up and moving. I was born the year "Sgt. Pepper" came out, so I'm a HUGE fan. Now I'm going to have to go home and look through all my Beatles CD's.

Thumbs up I've made a decision!

Okay, since I'm just home for the weekend I've made my cd! Thanks for your guys help

Here's what I've decided:

Good Morning Vietnam
Sandstorm
Bittersweet symphony dance mix
One more time - Daft Punk
Hella Good - No doubt
Billie Jean - Michael Jackson
Punk cover of Take on Me
Guiding Star - Cast
Wake me up before you go-go - Wham...(this is reserved for that session from hell, they'll wake to this everyday if they're really bad!)
Get out of my dreams, get into my car - Billy Ocean (I doubt that any of them have any idea who he is)
Space Oddity - David Bowie
Come On feel the Noise - Quiet Riot
Star Spangled Banner - Hendrix

basically this cd will be the start of the wake up and then I'll switch to whatever I want to listen to once they are up and moving.

When I went to summer camp they would wake us up to the Knack's "My Sharona." Another good one is "Maniac" from the Flashdance soundtrack.
