fines?

I was wondering how other chapters handle fines, or other disciplinary measures. Right now, we don't have anything we can do to brothers who skip chapter meetings or other mandatory events. We don't want to institute a fine, because it wouldn't do any good- some brothers are rich enough that we'd have to set it ridiculously high, and others are so poor that $20 would mean they couldn't eat for a couple days. We want to use something other than money, but we're really at a loss.

How about this. We have a points system for that reason (although we still have fines for some stuff). If you don't earn enough attendance points, you are not eligible to attend Crush, Socials, Formal, etc. That usually gets people to show up.

We have fines, but also if you aren't at important events, pinning, rush events, you can't take a little that semester. If you miss other events, weekly meetings, philanthropies, you can be put on letter suspension which is where you can't wear anything with letters for a certain amount of time. This works really well because most people don't realize how much of their wardrobe is actually lettered items until they can't wear them.

The point system is definitely interesting, I think we may do something like that. We don't have littles, and we rarely wear letters, so those wouldn't really do much. Thanks!

We TRY to think "out of the box" when it comes to undesirable behavior. A fine is something that in my opinion should only be treated as a last resort -- especially since as you said your guys are mostly broke. To replace fines we have work details at our house where there is a certain project that needs to be done... (mostly yard work) things like that. The only long-standing fine is the late fine of $10 for dues.

We had fines, but found that they didn't work in many cases, and some just couldn't pay in others. We started implimenting a system where after one unexcused absence, you were placed on social probation, until such a time as you made up the absence with work. Work parties are the only things left with fines. On social probation, if we were to have a party, one of two things would happen. a) you would have to stay away from the party until your workshift, work your shift, and then leave the party again, or b)have to work the ENTIRE party, and though you could have fun, the ammount of fun you could have was reduced by your duties. We also have monthly brother BBQ's, where we spend $100's or so, and cook up steak, pork chops, corn on the cob, shish kabab's, and a vegitarian meat option. Being on probation will cause you to have to miss the BBQ...but still clean up afterwords. there is a discussion of the house about losing voting rights for one meeting for every unexcused meeting absence as well.

M.
