Angry Stereotypes...

I will be rushing starting August 17th!! I had a little ranting to do...

First of all, does each house on your campus have a reputation? I've been doing my research, and it turns out that every single house on my soon-to-be campus has one, good or bad. I know a lot of the girls in the houses, and I know that every house seems to have a variety of girls--some goody-goody, some party animals, some sluts, some virgins....

But every house has a reputation, despite the diversity. A house I really like has a horrible reputation for being "high class sluts." I know that they can't ALL be sluts, but that's their name. And a lot of the other sororities are mean to them because of this. Another house is known as having all the "ice queens." I don't know any of them, but jeez!! Another one I like has a good reputation--they're known as being down-to-earth (their house isn't as fancy) which I'm sure they all aren't, but that's what their known for.

I want to be in a house that I feel comfortable in, but I don't want to inherit a bad name... Does anybody else have this problem?

Angry

We only have three sororities on campus; KD, ZTA, and ChiO. We are known as the Kappa Delta Cows, The ZTA bitches, and the Chi Hos. I don't think it's true at all, but I'm on a campus where the guy/girl ratio is 5 to 1, so I can't change guys' opinions. It makes me mad too!

Do not beleive in rumors! Find your own niche! The biggest is not always the bes on campus! I never went for the best, I pledge a large National and got butted out! I started my own local and it went LXA and have never looked back! They come and go on campus and every some many years they have to revitilize them selves!
You never know, you may be a part of a bigger picture! I often wonder if in 1965 if I could have started a Beta Chi National? To this day, there is not one! But I am proud to Be a LXA and always will be!

Ignore rumors. I had heard the Dz's were known as the Easy DeeZees, but I don't know one girl that is slutty- if they were slutty there name would be around campus bc that is the way people are. There was a girl-Erica from Dz who is on Panhellenic at my school and she is one of the classiest and nicest people I know. The Sigma Kappas are known as bitches- my big sis's old roomie is a sig kappa and super nice, Alpha Phi- didn't hear anything about except they are the brains- in my mind that isn't a bad rumor and AOPi had some mean names they were considered fat- but they have a lot of skinny girls.Aopi has nice girls- they gave me a bid, but I wanted a sorority that had a house bc I didn't want to live in the dorms again- AOPi is new to my campus!I think all sororities have reputations, but ignore them!!

I know that I am only echoing the other Greeks who have answered your post, but your question is very, very important and it definitely warrants responses from all of us who have been in your place.

When I rushed, there were 12 NPC organizations on my campus and right off the bat I turned a blind eye to 10 of them. Why? Because I was absolutely convinced that my four years of college would be a complete waste of time (socially, anyway) if I wasn't a Chi Omega or a Delta Zeta.

Everyone knew that that's where the pretty, popular girls went. They got the best mixers with the hottie fraternities. And to my 18 year-old mind, that was SO important!

Well, at the end of the road, Delta Zeta and I mutually chose each other. I was extremely lucky that, despite my closed mind during rush, I ended up in a place that I could call home. A place with the best sisters a girl could want. A place where I was comfortable but where I was also encouraged to grow as a person.

But I also missed out, I think. Looking back, I can see that I was very lucky that my singlemindedness let to a perfect fit. Because I can tell you that most of the girls who pledged a house based on popularity and reputation ended up miserable!

Throughout my years at college, I met, worked with and befriended women from the other sororities that I had turned my nose up at and I ended up feeling ashamed. A lot of them were WONDERFUL ladies with incredible bonds with their sisters. But I initially passed up the opportunity to know these women better because I had tunnel vision.

Please go into rush with an open mind and look at the sisters you meet as individual people. Remember that there is so much more to being in a GLO than wearing your letters around campus and going to mixers!

Sorry this is so longwinded! Good luck to you!

Thumbs up

Killarney Rose, I believe that was one of the best viewpoints on rush I ever read. It should be published in every recruitment booklet.

I've gone through a similar thing. All of my sororities had some kind of reputation (Well, is there one that doesn't? LOL) Unfortunately, I believed most of them until half way through rush. UGH. I hate it because I feel that my sorority has the worst rep of all just because we're smaller than the rest of the houses. People say that we're the house to go to if you're a "misfit" or if you couldn't get a bid anywhere else. People also think that we're stuck up and are prudes.

Idahovandal, please pay no attention to any stereotype that you hear. Most of them are probably started by ignorant people. I almost didn't accept my bid because it wasn't that "perfect, popular house" and because of those reputations I heard. That would have been the biggest mistake of my life! I wish you the best of luck.

I agree with the fact you have to go with who your comfortable with. Never go to a house based of reputation, if you do that and dont like the house, then youre experience wont be as great, but if you go with who you like over reputations, youll have one of the best experiences of your life, so pretty much what killarneyrose said. And to hootie, its nice to see another UNO greek on the board
