Has anyone else heard....
....that the new memorial the Gov't. is thinking about creating for the 9/11 tragedy, has run into a few P.C. snags? (You know, the one where the 3 guys were putting the flag up) I heard that some P.C. orgs. 'out there' are complaining that there should be a Mexican-American and an African-American along side a Caucasian, hoisting the flag atop what was left of the WTC.
I think this is ludicrous, considering it was 3 Irish-American Firefighters who actually hoisted the flag in the first place.
I say, leave it as it is.

In regards to the race of the 3 firefighters.................
DOES IT MATTER??
By that, if the statue is made of bronze,( or concrete, metal, etc.) how could anyone tell the race of each firefighter? Are there plans to produce this statue "in color"? As I recall the "first" statue that is of a similiar nature, reflects only one race.....THE COLOR OF THE METAL OF WHICH IT IS MADE OF!
Maybe NYC should also consider building a Memorial Park (similiar to the one dedicated to the victims of the OKC)?
HMMMMM.........

My God, what an un-issue.
Q: Why on earth would they want to change the race of the firefighters?
A: There are a number of hispanic and african-american firefighters who also gave their lives and were real heroes that day.
The attempt to salute them and recognize the efforts of eveeryone who was a hero that day is commendable IMHO. If people think it is so much of an issue then they should find another picture to make a statue out of, one that would not spark such an....intense response.

Um...
Racial issues asside, its a crappy idea for a monument.
Lets spend $2.15 on some originality and come up with a design on our own instead of using the Marine memorial (flag raising on iwo jima, WWII - ring a bell?) thats already in bronze in DC. The photographer said he snapped the famous photo because it looked like the one in DC.
Lets not allow emotion to rush us into something. They'll be cleaning up the site for the next 12 months anyway.
NO to a park either. NYC isnt about open spaces, like OKC is. Its not on the plains. NYC is about a mix, going, doing, changing, evolving. A park there wouldnt seem right. A museum or somehing, yes, but no , I dont see a park. (Plus, battery park is practally right there.)

A memorial park and memorial wall, with names engraved in granite, would make more sense. Period.

Steeltrap, Cokie Roberts said the exact same thing this past Sunday. She said that because so many people are completely LOST, no remains or anything, the families should have something special that says "them" that they can actually see and touch. I completely agree.

I believe it is hard to show the race of any firefighter or police or medic or anyone for that mater in stone or bronze. I understand their point, but trying to create three different races along with the statue, I don't think it has anything to do with them trying to PC but the realization, that yes more then one race of people were killed in the 9/11 tragedy.
I think if they can come up with a statue or some sort of orginal memorial, then that would be great. In the state of MD , we have a lot of different memorials and dedicated parks, and museums, but it all depends on the orginality of te designer
I can see a museum dedicated to the 9/11 events or even and engraved memorial, I think they should possibly ask the family's and the people of NY what ideas they might have.
