H.o.t. M.e.s.s.
Soror Moderators... feel free to combine this with another thread if you see fit, but I just wanted to make sure a lot of y'all actually saw this.
Okay, so I'm browsing around on cdnow.com and I see that there's supposed to be a "Tribute to Aaliyah" album released on the 15th of this month. I started listening to track samples, and y'all, there are some of the most non-singingest people just RUINING her songs! I mean, at first I was like, DANG Aaliyah sounds bad but then I realized it was some kind of country-western singer just messing all over "The One I Gave My Heart To". They are all TERRIBLE! I'm gonna chill now because I think it's one of those things you have to see/hear for yourself.

I have to say...
...I wonder if whomever made this CD got rights or permission to do "covers" of Aaliyah's music. I just can't see anybody selling off rights to those songs to people who cannot sing. Maybe it's really all about the money to them.

You are so right! That was a hot mess!
Is that the same girl singing all of those songs? It sounded like the same person to me. Needless to say, she could not sing if her very life depended on it. I don't know if it was because I was listening to it over the net, but those songs sounded like they were recorded in somebody's garage. And, whoever this lady is, she must have hired two of her friends to sing back up because they were horrible too.
I really hope that Aaliyah's family did not agree to this. These songs do not do any justice to preserving her legacy.

Do we even have a thread about Hot Mess? I'm not sure, but I think if we don't, the Delta's do. I forget, I'll do a SEARCH and find out. Either way, we'll merge the threads if there is. If not, this can be our Hot Mess thread. I know the fried bologna sandwich in the vending machine definitely earned it's spot up in here, lol.

If a song has already been recorded, you don't have to get permission to re-record it, as long as you acknowledge the WRITER and pay appropriately. I'm not sure if Aalyiah was a writer or not, but many performers do not have publishing rights or writing credit on the material they perform.

Well I'll be...thanks for enlightening me. I always thought that the label had to approve.
On a similar note, somebody has a "tribute" album to Beyonce and the Other Girls on cdnow as well.

Jaysis.
I thought that you had to be a musician with true longevity and a solid track record to rate a tribute album. I expect tribute albums for those who have contributed to the lexicon, like Aretha Franklin, Ella Fitzgerald or Sarah Vaughan, not another disposable quasi-pop trio.

Okay, those "tribute" albums sound like something a little child recorded on her first playschool radio......remember when you were little and used to sing in the speaker and record yourself?!? Or was that just me?

The Video "Rock tha Boat" is being put to rest. There is a new video (actually shot before Rock) that will premiere on 106 "More than a Woman". I think today, Aaliyah would have turned 23. If not today, then tomorrow.
