New Year Superstitions

Do you eat certain foods on New Year's or avoid certain things? Does your family have any New Year Traditions?

In my family we must have Black eyed peas for good luck and greens representing money. You must not was clothes the last day of the year or the first or you will wash someone out of your life. Anything you do on the first day, you'll be doing all year, like drinking, housework, etc.

i try to avoid superstitious type behaviour because i don't feel it has any bearing or influence on my life in general...i ultimately determine day to day whether i will allow certain things to affect my life...therefore avoiding certain superstitious activity...doesn't affect me positively or negatively...but positive and/or negative action on a daily basis...does...i think though that it is cool to have some type of family traditions that foster closeness and unity during the holiday season...

well, my family in particular doesn't do anything special....but my boyfriend's family has soup. Not some out of the can soup, but some serious, homemade, throw-down soup! That stuff is gooooooooood!

I think it's a Haitian tradition because, all my girlfriends who are of Haitian descent were telling me how they went home and had some soup.....I'm not sure. I gotta get back atcha on that one.

My family has the same beliefs...My grandmother will call you and make sure you don't wash between Christmas and New Years...

These are interesting. The only thing my family does is black eyed peas. Which I'm not very fond of.

Wink

My family tradition is to hold money in your right hand....preferably whatever the ending year is....2000 (My Mom gave us $20 and let us keep it) 2001....$1 ....2002 $2...and so on. We also don't do any laundry or housecleaning. The next time we do houseclean, we have to have a new broom and a new box of salt. I don't understand the salt thing.... I just do it 'cause that's what Nana said to do.

My boyfriend and his family usually have a big dinner....it's a Haitian thing....Gotta Love 'Em!

We had black eyed peas and greens. We used to have chitterlings, but now none of us eat pork.
