Formal Princess Recruitment :)

Sorry - posted this originally in the wrong spot

Hi Everybody!

I recently went through formal recruitment at my school, and am happy to say that I received a bid! If everyones interested in reading, I thought I'd share my positive experience. I'd prefer to keep my name and school private, but I'm sure it won't be that hard to figure out. I go to a small, public college with 4 NPC sororities, and 1 colony coming to campus this semester. Going into recruitment, I had a very open mind and no real prior judgments of the groups on campus. Greek life is actually pretty big on my campus, although each sorority had a campus total of about 60 before each recruitment.

I'll refer to each of the sororities on campus as Disney Princesses I hope you guys like my story

Round Robin
Our introduction to recruitment was actually very brief. The first night was deemed round robin, and we were put into our groups. For this night, all of the sorority sisters participating were wearing black, and not their letters. For some reason, we weren't supposed to know what group each girl belonged to. This was confusing to both the PNM's and the members, we both didn't really understand why we weren't supposed to know what groups the girls we were getting along with were in! They explained that it was just supposed to get us comfortable, which I guess it did. Each group visited three different areas. First, my group played an icebreaker with a group of the members. Pretty standard, we kind of just introduced ourselves. We continued to the "mixer" room, where we were escorted in by one of the members, and just made casual conversation. Our last activity of the evening was a craft room, where we made valentines to give to a battered women's shelter. All in all, it was a pretty good evening! I was a little intimidated by the amount of girls that came out for rush, the highest ever for my school, 150. This was a little scary because usually, pledge classes at my school, even for formal recruitment, aren't bigger than 15.

Thanks for reading!

Round 2 of formal recruitment was veeery long. Each group of PNM's attended five 45 minute parties. I'll be calling the sororities Ariel, Belle, Cinderella, Pocahontas, and Aurora.

My group visited Aurora first. I was pretty taken aback by the whole singing and chanting as soon as we walked in the door, I really wasn't expecting it considering how low key round robin had been the night before. My conversation with the girl that walked me in seemed a little forced and awkward to me. After doing their activity, I really was not feeling like I fit in with this group. They just didn't seem very close, and I was definitely sensing some of their bitchiness towards each other. I started to worry that it might just be me, and that the whole process would feel this way.

Next, we went to Cinderella. They had a really cute theme, and their activity was actually fun. I felt like I really loosened up here. I didn't have anything really in common with the girl that escorted me in, but there weren't too many awkward lulls in the conversation. I was introduced to several other girls that I got along with, and could see myself being friends with. Visiting this chapter really put me at ease and I was happy to feel a connection with them. I realllly wanted to be invited back to these girls!

For our third party, we visited Pocahontas. This is a new chapter colonizing on our campus. Girls from other chapters were there to talk to us about what it meant to become a colony member, and the benefits that it would bring. I was impressed with how close they seemed, but was kinda turned off by how little they knew, and wanted to know, about us. Some of the girls I talked to didn't even know where in the state they were. I believe that they were just trying to get their name out there, and were not actively recruiting. On the bright side, they had yummy snacks

Next, we went to Belle. I loved these girls!! They were so energetic and welcoming. They seemed to be genuinely having fun talking to all of us, and hanging out with each other. I really liked how connected they seemed to be. Their theme was sooo adorable!

My last party was at Ariel. I know I've been saying this for all the groups, but their theme was so cute! They clearly spent a lot of time preparing. I got along well with the first girl that I was introduced to, and even met another girl from my hometown. Even though most of them were nice girls, they definitely seemed awkward. Something just didn't click.

At the end of the night, I ranked the sororities like this:
Belle
Cinderella
Aurora
Ariel

Belle and Cinderella were definitely my favorites. I ranked Aurora above Ariel because they were many of the girls I spoke to's first choice. I know listening to "tent talk" is never good, but I figured I wanted to see what all of these girls had seen! At this point, I felt no connection to either group.

We didn't rank Pocahontas because they were dropping out of recruitment after this round, and we were told that they would be back in a few weeks to officially colonize. After a long night, I was really tired but excited for the rest of recruitment!

this is a great story! i think the round robin round sounds like a cool idea! not revealing affiliations at first could really help everyone see what a great group the greek system is, not just one chapter.

i totally understand your fixation on "cute themes." Not only are the parties more fun, but it gives off a vibe that the chapter really cares about PNMs enjoying their party!

while the members from other chapters of the sorority that will be colonizing aren't there to recruit, because they would have no say so in who gets invited back, they missed the opportunity to hone their recruitment skills when they didn't practice on the pnms.

hope you won't hold it against the colony, should you see them later in the semester. it was probably strange for them too! that situation is not one that chapters practice.

Thanks for all your nice comments everyone!

After waking up super early to check online what my schedule was, I was a little disappointed. I was dropped by my second choice, Cinderella. My schedule read:
Aurora
Belle
Ariel

I was really happy to be asked back to Belle! And I was verry excited that I had a full schedule for the day. (Our max was 3 parties.) I definitely still had an open mind at this point and was looking forward to seeing each group again

The day started with Aurora, who I did not particularly like the day before. A lot of other girls were really looking forward to seeing this group again, so I was hoping that I'd have a better impression of them. I was not disappointed! I loved them!!! The girl I talked to the most was so sweet, and introduced me to her big and twin. The conversation wasn't awkward at all, and I really could see myself being friends with these girls. Their PowerPoint with pictures from all of their events really made me feel like they were doing great things in their chapter, and all had a bond that couldn't be broken. Nothing seemed as forced as it did yesterday. I didn't want to leave this group!

Next was one of my favorites from the first day, Belle. This chapter did not disappoint! Their theme was adorable, I loved their slideshow, and the game we played. I did, however, find the girl that rushed me in to be a little awkward. Some of our conversation seemed forced, and didn't go as well as yesterday's had. I was excited that a lot of the girls remembered me!

Finally, I went to my last party, Ariel. I still really didn't feel a connection here. Most of these girls just seemed awkward, and like they were struggling to find things to talk about. I was sure that I didn't belong here.

I had a lot to think about before I ranked, and had a really hard time deciding!! I wasn't the only one, and a group of us ended up staying an extra fifteen minutes trying to decide. I ranked:
Belle
Aurora
Ariel

I was soooo torn between Belle and Aurora!! But I remembered the feeling I got from the girls from Belle as soon as I walked in the door yesterday, and chose to rank them over Aurora. It was a really hard choice, and I spent the whole night hoping that I'd made the right one!! The next night is Pref....

I always have to smile when people call a five party day long. Such a different perspective!

Lol - I can't imagine how some of the other girls do it! God bless you guys! I definitely have tons of respect for all of the Greek community after seeing the huge time commitment that rush is for everyone involved

Pref had finally arrived!!! I was SO nervous to find out if or where I'd been preffed. To top it all off, there was a problem with our system so we had to wait an extra two hours! I anxiously sat by the computer... and found out that I'd been preffed at...

Belle and Aurora!!!!!! I was SOOOO excited to be asked back to my two favorite groups

Pref was a lot different than I was expecting it to be. I hadn't really looked too much into it, (and know it's a sacred thing) so I was really surprised by the serenity of it all after a crazy, energetic week. I really fell in love with Belle even more, and left with tears in my eyes.

Aurora also made me fall in love! It was a beautiful ceremony and I already felt a connection with these girls I really wasn't sure about their sisterhood the first night of recruitment - but I left recruitment hoping to become a sister!

I had the hardest time trying to rank, once again. I think I'll wait till my next post to tell you guys about how I ranked, and who I received a bid from
