Contacting Rush Chairmen and the IFC
I was viewing the web sites of Interfraternity Councils and fraternity chapters at various colleges and universities. At a number of larger schools, men interested in rushing are asked to register with the IFC at their school. I also noticed that a number of fraternity chapters ask potential rushees to contact their rush chairmen.
Here's my question: at schools with 10, 20 or more chapters, is registering with IFC enough effort? Do men actually contact all the fraternities on campus, even if there are more than a score of chapters. In particular, I am thinking about young men who are interested in fraternity life who might not know much about fraternities as a whole or individual chapters in particular.
Just curious...

I'm the one of the rush chairs in my chapter on our campus in order to go through formal recruitment you have to register with IFC..when you do register IFC gives the chapters your info...Facebook is a could way to meet PNMs and sometimes that contact you 1st.. so i guess it really depends on the school!

A little late I guess, but the rushees register with IFC, which in turn sends their information to the chapters. Just like alaneagle said. Some chapters look at this information to decide who to narrow their list down to, so that they know who they want to take a look at during formal recruitment. Others just wait until formal recruitment comes around to decide who they go after. For example, a predominately Charleston, or Charlotte, or whatever city fraternity may look for kids in that area to narrow down their list of potential pledges. I've never heard of someone contacting all the fraternities. As for contacting the rush chairmen, most rushees that do are legacies or extremely interested in that specific fraternity. To contact all the fraternities would be over the top. As for facebook, its a growing trend but most of the elite chapters of the unversity don't use it because they have already locked down bids for that semester.

At my school, virtually nobody registered ahead of time. When we got our pledge class we had to have them all register on somebody's computer on bid day so they could accept their bids...literally only 1 or 2 out of 25ish would have done it beforehand.

No one should ever be forced to 'register' for IFC rush, and certainly not be required to pay money for the privilege. Let the free market work; allow the aggressive fraternities to prosper. There are lots of things the IFC can do to promote rush. Most campuses have an official 'rush week' where all houses are open to all intereted candidates over a span of four or five days. I oppose any rush restrictions.
